THIS IS WHY WE’RE HERE. @sarsarking - Here I am with some too-long Covid cowboy hair being very queer at one of my favorite places. I love Akbar because of my LGBTQIA+ community. I love it because it is one of the only spaces we have where all sorts of my community gather to celebrate ourselves. I have met some of my favorite people here. The jukebox lights me up and the cherry on top is when strangers come together to dance and sing… those are my favorite nights. I don’t party near as hard as I used to but I make time for Akbar because I need and want to be around my vibrant, dynamic, complicated community. I love being who I am. But I didn’t always. After three decades of figuring out how to love myself again, the road I’m on feels full of possibilities I didn’t see before. I am genderqueer, I am non-binary, I am gay, I am queer, I am a lesbian, I am a dyke, I am a fag, I am trans. Most importantly, I am really happy to be alive. Thank the aliens above for second and third chances at life. This world is hurting but I believe to my core in the power that comes from being authentically you. The name is an homage to a deep house cult classic from my favorite label, @runningbackrecords — “The Voice from Planet Love,” precious system. I was listening to the alien vocal from this track and it dawned on me that this is exactly how I want a party to feel — completely foreign and celestial, but also inviting, reassuring, intimate. An invitation to check expectations, to abandon ego, and to love. And what is love? A definition M. Scott Peck once put forth that bell hooks often quoted: “Love is the will to extend one’s self for the purpose of nurturing one’s own or another’s spiritual growth.” This, to me, is what music and its communal sharing can and should do. And I hope to facilitate that with you all on the dance floor. Come all and come as you are.
