When Grandpa Don had a heart attack, he was put on life support in the ICU. His 6-year old granddaughter was distraught with grief but was not allowed to see him. Taylor was relegated to the waiting room, - ‘No children permitted in the ICU'. The adults visited with Grandpa Don and gathered in the waiting room to report back and discuss his condition. Taylor listened to it all. She felt their shock, fear and confusion and clung to hope as they did. She prayed for a miracle with all her might, only to fall to pieces when he died a few days later. This is trauma. A child does not have the tools to process such a tragedy. And sadly, when loving adults are distracted by processing their own grief, children are often left to find their own way. The easiest, safest way is to shut down. Children suppress difficult feelings, slip into denial and fantasy or act out in an effort to release what they cannot express. Home funerals offer an opportunity for children to process their feelings slowly and safely. Grandpa Don’s body was brought home from the hospital. His family bathed and dressed him and lay him on his own bed for the 3-day vigil. This clip (please forgive the quality, taken on my phone) shows Taylor on the second day after she had decorated his bed with flowers. Her grandmother stands close by to offer comfort, support and to answer questions. They are sharing the experience together. Taylor was included in every step of the home funeral, she felt included, respected and safe. Please consider a home funeral for your loved-one and invite the children.
