February is Dental Hygiene month. Check with your vet about scheduling a deep cleaning. Oral health affects overall health. Rainy day in L.A., kitty style

February is Pet Dental month! I took my dog (and cat) in for a professional deep cleaning yesterday. In between vet cleanings, I use Virbac products for daily home tooth brushing.

If you’ve never done it, go incrementally.

1. Offer a taste of the toothpaste a few times. Make sure your dog likes the flavor so he thinks of it as a treat. Virbac offers poultry, tuna, and beef flavors.

2. Make your pet as comfortable as possible, ie on your lap, on his/her favorite pillow, or swaddled in a blanket.

3. Try different brushes to see what your pet is more comfortable with, a finger tip or traditional style toothbrush.

4. Hold your pet’s head up against your body for comfort and support.

5. Start with a small area using light pressure to help your pet get used to this very strange procedure, eventually working up to being able to brush all tooth surfaces.

6. Don’t give up!! You both have to learn to work together on this to get it done.

Dental hygiene is as important to your pets overall health as it is to ours. Don’t worry about getting it perfect everyday. Try to do a little each day 🤗

Daphne Sheldrick had dedicated her life to raising orphaned elephants. When Daphne visited the elephants gathered around her for a hug. In the early 1960s, she devised the first milk formula that kept rhino and elephant infants alive. She was an utterly amazing part of this world. Daphne did things that many could only dream of doing, and she did them well. She passed away in 2018, at the age of 83.
