STOP RENOVICTIONS! The city has to close the loophole that rewards slumlords by evicting tenants in rent controlled housing. It take a second to sign this petition!
Renovictions - LA Tenants Union Since the end of the COVID-19 tenant protections, hundreds of households have been displaced through “renovictions,” or eviction for renovation work. By exploiting a loophole in LA’s Just Cause protections that allows evictions for “substantial remodels,” landlords are able to circumvent r...

DON'T BELIEVE THE LIES.
"A spokesperson for the Koreatown Local branch of LATU, Tony Carfello, stated that the texts dictate the opposite of what Prop 33 proponents want, and that anyone who receives the message should ignore what he calls 'a desperate lie.'
"'We are encouraging [Los Angeles Tenants Union] members to vote Yes on 33 so that we can push for the expansion of the rent controls that keep our communities together and protect our homes from real estate speculators,' Carfello said. 'Any messaging indicating otherwise is merely a desperate lie from the panicking landlord lobby.'"
Vote YES on Prop 33.

Sam Russek of The New Republic reviews Tracy and Leonardo's new book, Abolish Rent.
"The argument of Abolish Rent is that the tenant crisis isn’t strictly about 'housing units' or land-use codes; it’s about power. 'Tenants can’t afford to be passive objects of social intervention or beneficiaries of a quick one-weird-wonky-policy fix,' the authors write. Drawing on around a decade of experience organizing the Los Angeles Tenants Union, currently the largest union of its kind in the U.S., Rosenthal and Vilchis demonstrate how tenants can save themselves by flipping the logic of evictions on its head. What if every housing complex was as fit for a union as any factory floor, with bosses that could be confronted, obstructed, and overcome through tenants’ collective strength? What if, together, we refused to pay rent?"
The Best Tool to Solve the Housing Crisis To improve conditions and lower prices, tenants should start withholding rent.
In the first decade of the 2000s, close to 13,000 people were displaced from Hollywood. Most of those people were Latino tenants.
Today, evictions in Hollywood outnumber other parts of Los Angeles, while vacancy rates are between 20% and 30%.
The Hollywood Local of LATU organizes tenant associations because neighbors are stronger when they stand together.
Come out for the monthly meeting of the Hollywood Local. Join us in the fight.
- Every 2nd Monday of the month at 7PM
- Blessed Sacrament Church at 6641 Sunset Blvd, Room 108
- Enter the back parking lot off of Selma Avenue

Any tenant in LA who thinks the rent is too damn high should read this story to understand how landlord lobbyist groups like AAGLA control City Council. In a city that claims to be trying to end homelessness—or even end annual increases in homelessness!—any rent increase is, in the words of longtime LATU organizer Elizabeth Blaney, “IMMORAL, IRRESPONSIBLE, and ABSURD.” We demand 0%. See you on the streets on December 3. Let’s make this the biggest tenant protest this city has ever seen.
//
From the South Central Local of LATU: The Vendors Union of Fiesta Mini Mall is practicing eviction defense as politicians continue to drag their feet. The Vendors Union has demanded Mayor Karen Bass and Councilmember Curren Price find relocation for all vendors; failing that, they should step in to stop the demolition of the swapmeet and secure a permanent stay. Ahead of a meeting with Mayor Bass, the Vendors are preparing to defend their building and livelihood from illegal lockouts.

FROM THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS CONGRESS
“NEVER AGAIN A MEXICO WITHOUT US!”
Protest from the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) - Indigenous Government Council (CIG): Attempt to evacuate the House of the Peoples
To the peoples and governments of Mexico and the world.
To human rights organizations.
To the media.
We denounce the distressing actions of a large group of riot police from Mexico City’s government over the past several hours, and their aggressive attempt to evict the Otomi Indigenous Community—including children, women, and the elderly—from their home at the "Samir Flores Soberanes" Peoples House (the former central building of the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples).
We remind you that this space has been "occupied" by the Otomi Community for three years, demanding housing and a set of basic rights, demands in the face of which the government has remained shamefully silent.
Three years after the takeover of the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples, this is the government's response to our comrades; this is the state's policy towards original peoples.
We call on organizations and collectives in solidarity with the struggles of the National Indigenous Congress and the original peoples not to abandon the Otomi Indigenous Community at this time.
We demand the governments of Mexico City and the federal government stop this violent eviction.
STOP THE EVICTION OF THE “SAMIR FLORES SOBERANES” HOUSE OF PEOPLES!!!
STOP THE WAR AGAINST OUR PEOPLES!!!
FOR THE FULL RESTORATION OF OUR PEOPLES!!!
NEVER AGAIN A MEXICO WITHOUT US!!!
Mexico, October 16, 2023.

Welcome to the Renters' District.👕❤️🔥
The KTOWN Local worked with printmaker to create the design for our shirt. All of our tenant associations were asked what the neighborhood and the union means to them. Tenants reflected on how our work is not only about protesting, but also about re-creating community, culture and ties to our land that were once lost. Gardening, kids playing, food distributions, a dragon alebrije, tejate…these are some of the things that come to mind.
referenced these ideas in combination with their own upbringing in the neighborhood to create this illustration.
In the future, we plan to distribute and fundraise with these shirts, possibly at an upcoming protest 👀. Come get a shirt, immediately put it on, and march with us!
They didn’t even spell it out… all the agents know what LATU means 😂
If your building is for sale and you’re worried about you or your neighbors getting displaced, take a hint from the realtors and get organized with the union!
👏👏 Avalon Tenants Association!
