Welcome our new chair
If you haven't heard the news yet, we are excited to announce that Professor Abrego is our future department chair!
----------
Official announcement from the Dean of Social Sciences:
"I am delighted to share the news that Professor Leisy Abrego has agreed to chair the Department of Chicana/o Studies for a three-year term, beginning July 1, 2020. As you know, the department is in the process of formalizing its offerings in Central American Studies in order to more closely align itself with emerging scholarship, regional demographics, and the interests of its students. Leisy has been a deeply engaged member of the department faculty for a decade and is poised to lead the department at this important juncture in its history.
I’d like to thank all of you who weighed in over the last couple of months about the department’s most pressing needs. You have aided me greatly in identifying Leisy as the ideal colleague to chair the department as we endeavor to build on its excellence. I am also especially grateful to Professor Eric Avila for his service as department chair over the last four years. Eric’s steady and thoughtful leadership has served the department well and I have truly enjoyed working with him.
The COVID-19 crisis continues to challenge all of us, but I wish you the best under the circumstances and hope you share my confidence that by working together we can emerge from this moment stronger than ever."
