So, when we mamas find ourselves at midlife and learn that we need to prioritize protein for our health and longevity, we often visualize loading meat onto our plates and scooping powders into our blenders. ✨ THE DISH ON PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS…✨
The dish is that maintaining a balance of gut microbes benefits your health in so many ways.
Some of the key benefits include:
👉🏻 helping to digest food and promote gut health
👉🏻 producing essential nutrients which support the immune system

But how do we get enough prebiotics and probiotics in our diet? 🤔
PROBIOTIC FOODS 💛
Yogurt, kefir, pickles, sauerkraut, miso, and kombucha. However, not all fermented foods still contain live active cultures of those bacteria by the time they get to the market or grocery store shelf.
Your best bet is to choose fermented products from the refrigerated section and check the product labels to ensure they contain “live active cultures”

And if you want to want to use a probiotic or prebiotic supplement to fill in the gaps, you want to look for a strain that is suited for your needs. I typically use ones that support the overall function of my gut microbiome. You’ll also want to consider how many colony forming units (CFUs) there are and how well they survive stomach acids to reach your lower gut and be effective there as well. If you are looking for recommendations, I have a few!

Mamas! Let’s kick off National Nutrition Month with these 4 important weekly tips you can start implementing throughout the month to nourish your midlife body!
🍀 Week ① Swap refined grains for whole grains.
Whole grains are packed with nutrients including vitamins, minerals, and fiber. This can help aid in satiety, blood sugar control, and digestive health, which are all important for midlife health.
Example: Choose brown rice over white rice.
🍀 Week ② Snack on nuts or seeds instead of chips or processed snacks.
Nuts are a great snack as they are packed with healthy fats we need during midlife. Pair them with some greek yogurt and some fresh berries.
🍀 Week ③ Add a serving of veggies to every dinner.
Adding a serving of veggies to each dinner will increase the amount of fiber you consume, as well as certain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all of which are vital to our midlife health.
🍀 Week ④ Have fish twice a week.
Fish is a great source of healthy fats, such as omega-3s. These types of fats are great for cognitive function and heart health at midlife and beyond. Try to get in two servings per week.
👉🏻 By the end of this month, you will have adopted four habits that nourish your midlife body and promote longevity post menopause!
