Ernie's descent into addiction was quick.
By 16, he was addicted to he**in, “Heroin became the most important thing to me. And I sought it at every opportunity. I did everything that I had to get the next fix. And that was my focus. The center of my life was he**in. And that lasted for the next 37 years of my life.”
Even as he alienated every person closest to him, his mom wouldn’t give up, “She knew in her heart that I was eventually gonna come around, but it took close to 40 years for that to happen.”
It wasn't until the age of 52, after what felt like a lifetime of turmoil, that Ernie's moment of reckoning finally arrived. Faced with his rock bottom, he reached out to his cousin, who had found redemption through Teen Challenge — a last-ditch effort to break free from the shackles of addiction that had bound him for so long. When his cousin gave him the induction center’s number, he called immediately and couldn’t help but agree to go the very next day.
Ernie remembers his first day at Teen Challenge as if it happened yesterday: “Right when I walked through those doors, I literally felt the Holy Spirit come upon me from the bottom of my feet to the top of my head. And then I felt a load lifted off of my shoulders that I'd been carrying my entire life. It's almost as if God reached down himself and lifted that off my shoulders. And I walked in there and I just felt that peace and I knew I was in the right place.”
Today, nine years into his journey of recovery, Ernie helps guide others on their paths to redemption, and offers hope to those who, like him, once felt lost and alone in the darkness.
There are thousands of men and women who still feel like all they’ll ever amount to is a drug addict. That there’s no hope for them, that there’s no way out. You can help us provide a way out through your generous giving! You can make a recurring or one-time gift today, and it will make a life-transforming difference in someone’s life.

“I have been introduced to a new love and passion, working with the succulents, one I know I will carry on with me after I’m finished with the Teen Challenge program. One of the most beautiful things to me about the succulents is that the leaves/cuttings can be re-planted and cared for, and they’ll survive and grow. I can relate – even though I’ve felt broken apart, I’m being cared for at Teen Challenge, am growing in the grace and mercy of the Lord, and I have a new purpose. When I work with the succulents – caring, re-planting, watering, choosing the ones I want for the particular pot they’ll grow in, it gives me a beautiful image of what God is doing with me. He’s taking His time, tenderly caring for me, paying attention to what I need and how He wants me planted.” John 15:1-2 says, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” M.M., a student at Teen Challenge

If you ask Google where Jesus is buried, you'll discover that Google has the wrong answer. Watch as Teen Challenge of Southern California Executive Director Ron Brown shares an encouraging word about the empty tomb.
Today is the day after … At our center, the staff and women in the home are choosing to believe the truth that they are worth Jesus dying for and that the Holy Spirit can indeed raise them to also to new life just as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. 💥 ❤️
Celebrate life today and everyday!
We’re thankful to have the whole story today to realize the darkness of today brings us forgiveness, healing and the greatest sacrifice of love. ❤️✝️❤️
Thank You that You did everything necessary to redeem us. Thank You Jesus, for your sacrifice on the cross. We are healed because of You. May we live in Your truth today and always.
Ameerah was getting desperate, “I was addicted to not only the substances, I was addicted to the pain. And it got to a point where I couldn't even look in the mirror anymore. I was hallucinating. I was having severe withdrawals. I was having seizures. I was having a lot of physical decay.”
“I knew there was a God. I didn't know how to reach him. I didn't know how to access him. But I knew that there was something up there that could lift me out of this. So I angrily packed my bag … I contacted Darlene at LA Teen Challenge, and she said, ‘You've got to come now. You cannot wait.’”
Ameerah arrived at Los Angeles County Teen Challenge in 2019.
“October of 2019 I accepted Jesus Christ in my heart. I got baptized and I just knew that there was something else on the other side of all the darkness that I had faced.” It was time to break free from the addiction and the pain that had been keeping her prisoner for so long.
“I remember seeing all my past fall away… And from that moment I was like, let's go. I have a hope. I have a future. I want to get to know this Jesus.”
You can read her entire story and support the life-transforming work of Teen Challenge at teenchallenge.org/Ameerah.
What motivates you to give?
Whatever the motivation, at LA Teen Challenge, we’re grateful for everyone who gives of their time, talents and treasures because you are literally saving the lives of women and positively impacting their families and communities in which they will live.
Thank you.
