Psalm 77
“To the broken Christ follower”

1 I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice and he gave ear unto me.
2 In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
3 I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah
4 Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5 I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times
6 I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with my own heart: and my spirit made diligent search
7 Will the Lord cast off forever? And will he be favorable no more?
8 Is his mercy clean gone forever? Doth his promise fail forevermore?
9 Hath God forgotten to be gracious? Hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah
10 and I said, this is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
11 I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old
12 I will meditate also of thy work, and talk of thy doings
13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
14Thou art the God the that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
15 Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16 The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
17 the clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
18 The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook
19 thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known
20 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

We all experience trouble. This psalm that Asaph writes is a good picture of what Christians go through sometimes.

In the last few days, I have experienced some things that I won’t go into specifically but they are things that if the devil had his way would knock me completely of off the course that I have been on since I got saved on August 15 2014.

I know that I am called to serve God and that one of my spiritual gifts is the gift of speaking. I have done my best through fear and anxiety to do the best I can do to let God use me the way He sees fit, whatever that may be. I am far from perfect or even good. I have only tried, and I will continue to try.

In this psalm he is experiencing trouble that he doesn’t understand and it feels to the writer that God is no longer near, or looking out for him, and he thinks that maybe he is no longer in Gods favor.

If we follow Christ we all feel like this sometimes and every time we do it seems new and fresh, especially if we “commune with our own heart” about it. Jeremiah 17:9 says “the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it?”

The truth is that your heart and your feelings will lie to you. They will tell you that God doesn’t care. They will tell you that you’re all alone in this world and that you won’t be ok again.

Like the writer of this Psalm we must make it a point to remember what God has done for us in the past and to talk about it especially in these times of trouble when your heart is lying to you. We have to remember what he has done to better understand what he can do.

We have to remember most importantly the power of the God that we serve. He has the power to command the wind and the water and the sun and moon and everything in between. We have to remember “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not on thine own understanding” Proverbs 3:5

Sometimes it may feel like God is not near and that he doesn’t care but we have to remember in times like these that feelings don’t matter. What matters are the facts and the truth. The facts are that God has brought me through every difficult thing I’ve ever faced and that gives me confidence that He will also bring me through this. The facts are that no man is perfect and everyone falls short of what God created us for which is to have full faith and trust in Him. We fail at that not God. The word sin is an archery term that means a miss of the mark. God created us to have full trust in him and we miss that mark and a just God demands that there be a price paid for that missing of the mark. The gospel in a nutshell is that Jesus paid that price for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” and Romans 5:8 says “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

If you are going through hard times, I hope that this can be an encouragement to you. If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior I understand because for 33 years of my life I lived and walked in darkness too, blinded of the goodness of God by the enemy. But if you will allow him, he will come and make his home in your heart and he will open your eyes to what he has done for you and what he can do for you and just how much He does love you and how much he does care. Romans 10:9 says that if we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus and if we believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead that you shall be saved Romans 10:13 makes it clear that God doesn’t pick and choose who can and can’t do this it says “for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” If you’ve never met Jesus I urge you to open your heart to Him. If you’re a struggling Christian like me I hope that you can use this Psalm to remember what God has done for you and to have confidence that he will bring you through whatever it is that your going through now. Sorry this is so long, I just felt like maybe this could help someone today as it has helped me. I love you all.
