According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, there were around 5.2 million inpatient pediatric hospitalizations in the United States in 2019. Whether planned or unplanned, a one-time experience or one in a series of encounters with the health care system, each hospitalization can have a major impact on the child and family. Today we’re sharing more about President Katie Bigelow and why she founded Bret Bigelow Foundation.
Katie joined the Army as a Blackhawk pilot, flying tours in Iraq and other areas in the Middle East for over 10 years. She then graduated into civilian life to raise her 8 children. Katie found herself the mother of a terminally ill child, Bret, which reshaped her identity.
The Bret Bigelow Foundation now honors Bret's memory by providing specially made pajamas to terminally and chronically ill children in the metro Detroit area, giving them dignity and comfort to support them through their hospital stays. Learn more about our story at https://bit.ly/3UVfE03.

Bret Bigelow Foundation was founded in honor of Bret Bigelow.
Bret contracted food poisoning before he was born and barely survived. The miracle was not only that he lived, but he inspired everyone around him. He lived six years and endured countless medical procedures. He smiled when pain was unbearable and faced uncertainty with honor and strength.

What are BRETS?
BRETS are innovative pajamas that Bring Rest and Ease Through Solutions.
When most children are admitted into a hospital, they are given bed gowns which can leave them feeling vulnerable and exposed. Our Bret Bigelow Foundation (BBF) pajamas are designed with snaps in the seams to allow medical staff to attend to the patient while they remain fully clothed.
The tops have a v-shaped neck to accommodate medical instruments on the head and neck as well as an opening on the chest for cancer ports, other medical wires, or tubes. Also, the bottoms have buttons on the waistline to adjust for any weight changes.
The BBF Team has sourced feedback on the design and received a plethora of positive reactions on the pajamas.
