Adriana Barrios’ artist statement for the piece titled, February 2022 (voiceover by Jen Graham). Adriana Barrios’ piece, February 2022 depicts coastally armored shorelines which symbolize humans’ incessant obsession to control nature. Black scratch-like marks are produced using beach sand and rock samples from the coast as drawing tools which imagine a history of impact and collision of the ocean and land mimicking a cliff collapse or the repetitive pulse of cobbles on a shoreline during storms. Beach sand flocked over screen-printed text makes visible the words global wake up call goes to voicemail. Barrios’ work connects the rich tradition of printmaking as a form of resistance and as a medium for social and political commentary. Jayne's Thursday Post: The finished piece vs. the inspiration ✨ I made this piece titled, Hibernation (Tulipiere), while participating in a two week residency at the wonderful Peters Valley School of Craft in October 2022. Inspired by the rich fall landscape and local wildlife, my hope for this piece was to give the viewer a sense of being present in that moment in time and space. A tulipiere, or tulip holder, is an ornate multi-spouted vessel in which to display tulip stems, usually made of hand-crafted pottery, classically delftware. The quote wrapping around the middle, by Oscar Wilde, says “with bright eyes the rabbit peers from the dark warren the fir-cones lie”. Thanks for following along!! I’ll be back tomorrow for my last post with @watrousgallery ❣️ -Jayne

The Mending Project at Madison Public Library
Founder of the Sewing Machine Project, Margaret Jankowski, and two of the menders at the Mending Project, Kate Kvale and Anne Rhyme, sat down with us to talk about how the Mending Project got started, what they do, and what their work means to them. Do you have clothing or other fabric items that need mending? Sewers from the Sewing Machine Project offer free mending at both Madison Public Library's Central and Hawthorne Libraries on a regular basis. These helpful sewers mend clothing and can handle any other fabric-related repairs. Make sure to check out their event on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 11am, just one part in the event series Mending: Community Repair in Madison! Learn how volunteers do free mending for the local community. Volunteer menders and coordinators, as well as their library partners, will share the history of the program and stories of their experience. The mending session can be observed in room 211 and a Q+A will be presented in the Local History Room on the second floor. #mend #repair #community #themendingproject #thesewingmachineproject #madison #gallery

Glenn Williams, "Pipe Dream" (2019)
In Glenn Williams’ sculpture, “Pipe Dream” (2019), a figure is covered by a blanket marked “Special Field Order No.15”, an order issued in 1865 by General William Sherman with the intention to set aside a large area of land within which freed Black people could be resettled. Within a year, however, President Andrew Johnson ordered that land to be restored to its previous white owners, much to the dismay of the African Americans who had been resettled there. Williams’ work references histories of displacement and reflects critical challenges of social repair. Hear Williams’ speak about his work and don’t miss him at the MEND gallery talk on Sunday, Oct 8 at 2pm! #wisconsinartist #sculpture #madisongallery #mend #repair #socialrepair

Sylvie Rosenthal was able to join us in the gallery and give a run down of the repairs she made on her piece “Friend (With Scalloped Edges)”. Using an old piece of furniture she found at the thrift store, she was able to give the piece a new life and a new flare! #mend #repair #woodworker #madisonartist #wisconsinartist #madisongallery #furniturerepair
