Painted this little, intimate water scene of fallen logs after the fail. Trying something different can be very helpful!
Let’s not pretend every painting is going to be a masterpiece! I’m sharing my fail. There were a lot of reasons this was doomed to fail. We were trying to find a good fishing spot for the fam, tried several places, then settled by Menor’s Ferry but late in the morning. It was sunny and no cloud cover. I started to paint the Tetons in flat midday light which was a bad choice. The mountains and trees wrestled to decide which would be important. I got this far then scraped it. I think it’s really important to get right back out when this happens.
I painted this Mt Moran painting Monday afternoon at String Lake. I got a late start because of a bad painting experience in the morning. When that happens, the best thing to do for me is to get right back out to somewhere I’m more likely to have success. I’ve painted along the shores of String Lake a lot so this was more of a sure thing. I’ll share the bad one in the next post because as artists we all struggle. No point in pretending that doesn’t happen.
Beautiful sky this morning! Got out early to paint along the Snake River. The cloud cover made some wonderful, soft atmosphere that lasted a while. My show at Mountain Trails Gallery opens tonight. I’ll be painting in the gallery from 4-7pm so stop by to say hi!
Second painting of the day needed to be something much simpler, so I simply turned around to this view of the bank of Taggart Lake. Looking for big, simple shapes. Plus it reached 90 degrees today, so staying by a shady, alpine lake is a good thing!
Every time I go to the Tetons, I have to do an everything but the kitchen sink painting, just to drive myself crazy. So here it is. Scroll through to see progress shots. The first I’m considering drawing/block in. This step is painted very thinly to get the design. I can easily paint thicker over this step. The next step is consider fully rendered, but not a painting. There’s a difference. Rendered is what I see. The final painting is how I adjusted the rendering to make the design more interesting. I’m never completely satisfied when I paint this big view in a plein air format, but this one got closer than many.
Quick study of clouds before the rain hit. I’d like to include this fork of the Snake in a future painting, but kept it simple tonight. Beautiful sky!
We have a beautiful creek and aspen grove in the backyard of our condo. It was really fun to paint this intimate scene as a change from the large Teton views.
The fam and I hiked to Phelps Lake to do some fishing and painting this morning. What great light! Really had fun with the light and shadow across the lake. Scroll to see progress shots. You can also see the fast moving duck family that joined us in my story!
We spent last night at Jackson Lake Lodge. The fam ate at the lodge while I painted because they protested that they didn’t want to eat at 10pm again ha! Had a blast attempting this big view. No less than 12 people asked if I saw the elk herd in the willows, which I replied, “no I’m only watching the sky!”
Some of us painted along the Snake River, some of us fished along the Snake River. A good afternoon.
Delivered 12 new paintings to Mountain Trails Gallery in Jackson, WY today. Sizes from 36x48 to 8x8. I’ll be in the gallery from 4-7pm on Thursday, painting and talking art. Stop by and say hello if you are around!
Up early this morning to catch the sunrise over Sleeping Indian mountain at R Lazy S Ranch. I’ve painted from here before. I love how the warm sky silhouettes the mountain, then the cottonwoods and entrance gate provide strong darks and good depth. Morning at R Lazy S Ranch, oil, 8x10.
First painting in the Tetons! Spent the evening at Jenny Lake shaking off the cobwebs. Jenny Lake was surprisingly not crowded!
An afternoon sky painting from our hotel in Fiesole, Italy. This was my first painting from the balcony, experiencing how truly special is this place and this view!

Another beautiful sunset from our hotel in Fiesole, Italy. This particular evening the light was warm and soft, but there was a thundercloud building in the distance.

We had the most beautiful view of the hills from our hotel in Fiesole, Italy. Fiesole is a village in the hills overlooking Florence. Only about a 20 min drive from Florence, it’s peaceful and quiet.

Our workshop group painted in the Bardini Gardens in Florence, Italy. So beautiful and lush! In addition to an abundance of flowers, its architecture and sculpture is equally lovely. We were there after the wistera bloom, but this arch was still lovely.
Finished painting from the reel I posted. Evening on the Buffalo Fork, 36x36. Not the final title, still in the works. Suggestions?
One more plein air sunset from lovely Fiesole above Florence.
Another plein air done from the beach while our kids swam and paddle boarded. Mount Vesuvius from Vico Equense.
Today we visited the Pantheon, oldest building in the world still in use today, completed in 432 BC. First, a pagan temple, then a Roman Catholic Church. The large, bronze doors are 2000 years old. Pantheon’s dome is the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. Kings, queens, artists and architects are buried here. The tomb of the artist Raphael sits under the Virgin and Child. Pretty amazing.
Hooray! I love it when my family can all find their own fun in one spot! We visited Vico Equense for a day of sun and fun. The sun went behind the clouds, which made for some interesting painting atmosphere. Collin and Lucas tried out the beach!
The light and the atmosphere of Paestum was just so wonderful for the couple days we were there! This part of our trip is a family trip so I haven’t been painting, but I can certainly see the attraction of the area for painters. The archaeological site of Paestum is home to three of the world’s best-preserved ancient Greek temples, dating from approximately 550 to 450 BC. These temples are dedicated to Poseidon, Hera and Athena.
We made it to Monterosso! Feels as though we are here before the large crowds and we are so grateful. Character and charm in every corner. We’re also getting in a good workout as every “road” seems to actually be a staircase. SO many steps!
Here are a few photos of the Tuscan countryside near San Gimignano.
Another painting from my Fiesole, Italy balcony. Fiesole sits in the mountains above Florence. You can see all of Florence from several viewpoints in Fiesole. Ah the Tuscan sunsets!
SO many wonderful things to do that I haven’t been posting, but getting caught up now that the workshop is over. I had a wonderful balcony from my apartment in Fiesole, Italy. With this view, we didn’t need to go far.
We’ve had the absolute pleasure of touring and painting in the Etruscan ruins in Fiesole, which contains the Etrusco-Roman temple, the theatre and the thermal baths. Fiesole is a beautiful, Tuscan village in the mountains overlooking Florence. These views are magical, and we are thoroughly enjoying painting at this location.
