What’s causing my nail separation - Onycholysis
1. Trauma (acute trauma- dropping something heavy on your toenail or micro trauma - bumping your toe, overlapping toenails- Chronic improper fitting shoes.)
2. Allergic reactions to gel polish or ingredients in regular polish
3. Over filed nails or picking off gel polish
4. Autoimmune- like psoriasis (pitting on the nail)
5. Certain Medications - speak with your Dr.
6. Fungal infections- thick, yellow, crumbling nails

When I see the separation of the toe nail, I let the client know right away! Most people will not notice this themselves 😩

Next ~ I go through my checklist📋
✔️Does it look like a fungal infection? Ask have they been diagnosed- refer to podiatrist - do not continue with services - per state board of ohio
✔️Are they on medication? Ask the pharmacist if medication can cause nail seperation?
✔️Any pitting on the nail? - Refer to a dermatologist. Remember we cannot diagnose!
✔️New clients - Ask have you recently used gel polish or change brands of polish? This could be an allergic reaction (allergic reaction will have a thickening, dry skin under/around the nail)
✔️Any trauma? (Acute or chronic)
Chronic - if you wear improper footwear- if your toes are “smoosh” together- you will see the separation near the sides of the big toes. Ladies fall back on the narrow high heel shoes!👠

Next…
✔️The area that’s lifted/ seperated must be cut back. Keep the nails short/trimmed on a regular basis ~~ every 2-3weeks.
✔️No nail polish - nail polish raises moisture level in the nail plate
✔️PATIENCE—it can take up to 18months for the nail to grow properly..
✔️Keep in mind there are stages to Onycholysis
- Stage 1 -2 millimeters of the nail is seperated - this can be cut away- and grows back quickly. I will monitor proper growth.
- Stage 3 - from 1/3 to 2/3 of the nail is seperated - will take a very long time for the nail to grow out healthy- you will be referred to a podiatrist for additional trimming, cleaning out of debris,testing, and treatment. It could be fungal related.

Ewww!! I have a greenie on my nail!!

Greenies, also known as chloronychia or Pseudomonas nail infections, are caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

This is a bacteria (not mold) thrives in damp environments with little air circulation. When it grows, it produces green pigments which cause the green discoloration on nails.

The infection can occur between the nail plate and the nail bed, or between acrylics and the nail plate. As the infection progresses, the stain can spread and turn dark green or black.

*people without nail enchantments are susceptible to this as well - it lives in soil and hot tubs. If you’re experiencing seperation of the nail plate, greenies can grow.

* remove the enchantment, so that the area can be treated until it clears up. Although most people cover it up, it’s not the best way to handle this. Keep an eye on it for a few days.

*nail tech, be mindful of your prep! Make sure you are prepping the nail correctly

*while wearing any nail enchantments (acrylic, gel-x, or gel polish), avoid long exposure to water.

*take action as soon as you see lifting, contact your nail tech to have your nails maintenanced
