If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it? Bad advice alert - let’s find out why! If you can’t pronounce it, Google it and educate yourself - that’s a more sensible approach. The saying “if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it” is a common piece of dietary advice that suggests that any food with a complex or unfamiliar name is inherently unhealthy or dangerous. BUT, this statement is not only overly simplistic but also inaccurate 🙄 Many foods have long and complex names, especially in scientific or medical contexts. These names may be difficult to pronounce, but that does not mean they are unhealthy or dangerous! Elements that are vital to good health and continued living have some of the hardest-to-pronounce names, for example: Histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine… Those are the 9 amino acids in protein that your body needs as it can’t make these essential amino acids itself. How about these… Retinol, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, cobalamin, ascorbic acid, calciferol, tocopherol. Those are vitamins A to E. I think we get the point. So, next time you see an unfamiliar ingredient, don’t assume it’s bad and to be avoided. Don’t assume it’s fine. Learn, grow and support yourself confidently.
