Kilim rugs are handwoven rugs that are traditionally made in Eastern and Southern Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Western Afghanistan. "Kilim" is an old Turkish word that means "to spread around." These lovely rugs are a sub-category of flat-weave rugs, which means they are made on a loom rather than being knotted, and thus lack a tufted pile. As the name suggests, this method of weaving allows flat-weave rugs to be very slim-line and flat, not to mention that their manufacturing is cheaper as a result, making them more affordable.
The rectangular rug, which is typically used as a wall tapestry, is the most common shape for flat weave kilim rugs. There are also smaller sizes available.
