💪 Serving the community in which we were raised

Look who I ran into this morning at Day Surgery! Great seeing you Dr. Balderas.

Little known fact: When I was a medical student, I rotated through the GI service at UT Southwestern Medical Center when Dr. Balderas was a third year GI fellow 🙂 Just a couple of valley kids doing their thing! 💪🏽

Advanced Endoscopic Procedure Performed at RGRH

Rio Grande Regional Hospital (RGRH) is committed to providing the residents of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) with the medical care they need close to home. For many years, residents of the RGV who required specialized care or procedures related to the pancreas or biliary disorders had to travel outside the area to find the necessary medical professionals and/or equipment. Fortunately, as the Valley continues to grow, so has the expansion of healthcare services and physicians.

Board Certified Gastroenterologist Dr. Valeska Balderas, born and raised in the RGV, completed an additional year of training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio dedicated to advanced endoscopic techniques. As a highly trained endoscopist, Dr. Balderas is one of only a few physicians in the Rio Grande Valley who can perform complex and detailed procedures, including Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and diagnostic interventional Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure used to visualize and produce images of the digestive system by inserting an endoscope (a long, flexible tube with a camera on the tip) through the mouth or re**um. The probe produces detailed images of the lining and walls of the digestive tract, chest, and nearby organs such as the pancreas, liver, and gall bladder. These detailed images allow the physician to diagnose certain conditions that may cause abdominal pain or abnormal weight loss. In addition, physicians can also diagnose diseases of the pancreas, bile duct, and gallbladder when other tests are inconclusive or conflicting. EUS identifies different gastrointestinal (GI) disorders instead of using more invasive approaches like surgery. A EUS procedure takes approximately one hour, and patients can return home shortly after the procedure.

Since 2011, Dr. Balderas and the highly skilled team at RGRH have been using this innovative diagnostic tool.

This is what we call c.diff colitis.
Clostridioides difficile (c.diff) is a spore-forming, toxin-producing, gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that causes antibiotic-associated colitis. It colonizes the human intestinal tract after the normal gut flora has been disrupted (frequently in association with antibiotic therapy). C. difficile infection (CDI) is one of the most common health care-related infectious colitis. It can lead to prolonged hospital stay, sepsis, and in extreme cases lead to total colectomy or even death. There are only a few antibiotics that can treat this and when those fail, a f***l transplant is completed which helps restore good normal gut flora.
