The Push-up…One of the most poorly instructed, understood and executed movements Here are some tips that will keep your body aligned, engage the appropriate lower and upper body muscles and keep you structurally safe. 1️⃣ start in a high plank position, stacking your shoulders over your wrists 2️⃣ cork screw your hands into the floor angling fingers out to prevent flaring out of elbows 3️⃣ squeeze pecs/lats, quads and glutes, and keep your pelvis tucked in 4️⃣ track your elbows to the wall behind you, bringing the chest down to the floor first and keeping the hips off the floor (as good as it might feel, do the floor a favor and don’t hump it) 5️⃣ Bonus tip - not ready to perform a strict push-up, that’s ok, apply these same tips adding lowering your knees to the floor for additional support, chest to floor, hips off the floor and still keep those toes/feet down and in contact with the floor, at the top of each push-up raise the knees contracting the quads and glutes in the high plank position. As you advance, use one knee and eventually none. The simplicity of the push-up can lead to misconceptions about proper form and technique. Many individuals perform push-ups without proper alignment, resulting in excessive strain on the shoulders, back, and wrists. Common mistakes include sagging hips, flared elbows, and improper hand placement, which can diminish the effectiveness of the movement and increase the risk of injury. Additionally, there is a lack of emphasis on the importance of core engagement during push-ups. Many people focus solely on the arms and chest, neglecting the role of the core in stabilizing the body throughout the movement. This oversight can lead to inefficient mechanics and reduced strength gains.
