🌟✨ Despite differing opinions, I firmly believe in the significance of a birth plan. It serves as a cornerstone for initiating crucial conversations with your provider, saving precious time during labor, and ensuring your preferences are honored amidst the intensity of childbirth. Let's break down the three key components of a comprehensive birth plan:
✅Preferences: This section outlines your desires for the birthing experience, encompassing everything from pain management to positions. Whether you prefer a medication-free birth, specific comfort measures, or certain interventions, articulating your wishes sets the stage for a more personalized and empowering journey.
❗Contingencies: Acknowledging the unpredictability of childbirth, this part of the birth plan addresses potential deviations from your preferences. It includes scenarios where you may be open to interventions or procedures you initially wished to avoid, providing flexibility and informed consent as circumstances evolve during labor.
✉️Communication: Effective communication is key to ensuring your birth plan is understood and respected by your care team. This section outlines how you wish to discuss your preferences with your provider, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mutual respect throughout the birthing process.
Beyond its role in guiding your care, a birth plan can also serve as a valuable tool for communicating with family members and visitors postpartum, setting boundaries and ensuring a supportive environment for bonding with your newborn.
In essence, a well-crafted birth plan serves as a roadmap for your birthing journey, empowering you to advocate for your preferences, navigate unexpected turns with grace, and foster open communication with your care team. 🌿💕

🫣Reclaiming your dream birth in the face of 'risks'—it's a courageous stance. Let's be real; emergent situations exist, and birth factors are complex. Few experience their envisioned 'dream' birth in reality. But here's the thing: the definition of high risk keeps expanding, yet maternal mortality rates persist. Your 'risks' shouldn't erase your bodily autonomy or your role as the patient. My journey with my son's gastroschisis taught me that even in perceived high-risk scenarios, options exist. I sought a provider who supported a physiological birth despite an induction after having been told a cesarean was my only option. I saw FIVE OBs before finding one who supported physiological birth, giving me all the options they could without risking my son, and making sure that my birth experience was empowering. Having a birth preference guide opens the door to dialogues with your provider—seeking ways for an empowered and positive birth, even if not the exact one you envisioned. Your voice matters in your birthing journey. 💪✨
If you've known me since I had Mc, I have NOT shut up about pregnancy birth. I do not think I am capable 😅 I started pregnancy semi knowledgeable but lacking in confidence to really voice my choices. With Mc's diagnosis and being thrust into a system meant to create model patients that ultimately abused me, I was LOST. I had so much medical trauma I was struggling to even find a provider that would listen. I don't think I've ever said this but I found a quiz online about preparing for childbirth and it led to finding my autonomy. It changed. My. Freaking. Life. I found my confidence not just in birth but in myself as a person. As a mom. I found my community. I found my passion. Finding that quiz ultimately led to me advocating for myself and Mc to have the best birth for us and a better experience in NICU. So many reasons they gave as to why Mc did so well was because I advocated for us. Things that literally saved our lives.
Because of a quiz that taught me to value my autonomy and shift my mindset.
Kyleigh Banks created that quiz. I have wanted to meet her since 2021 and this weekend I DID. (I may have cried every day 😅) When she created what is now Birthworker Academy I KNEW it was for me. I KNEW this would change my life even more. I am forever grateful for that "silly quiz" I took online. I can never thank her enough for lighting that fire in my soul that was the start of me loving my life. Thank you Kyleigh 🖤 I love being apart of something so big.
Understanding Doulas: What They Offer and Why Consider One 🌟
Not everyone may opt for a doula, and that's perfectly okay! I hired one for my pregnancy, yet circumstances changed, and I didn't need her during birth thanks to my supportive partner.
Doulas provide extra support during labor, offering continuous care and encouraging partners to actively participate. Did you know your OB or midwife might not be by your side throughout labor? That's where a doula steps in, not for medical care but to support you and your partner.
Their role? Empowering you to have the birth experience YOU want, not what others say you "need." Birth isn't just a medical event; it's a natural, primal function. Doulas champion this perspective, offering incredible benefits during childbirth. I'm here to guide you, especially when plans take unexpected turns. 🖤✨
Take the damn picture. Forget the perfect angle. Forget if the moment feels imperfect. Ignore the tubes, wires, and the uncertainty. I speak from a place of experience in the NICU where every part of me resisted capturing those raw moments. I didn't want reminders of my baby's struggle. I wanted to erase the tubes, the lines, the pain. But looking back, that was my baby. That was my newborn. I wish I'd taken more pictures, embraced the imperfections, and cherished the journey. The most precious captures are the ones my husband sneaked, believing I might change my mind. Capture the moment; you won't regret it. 📸💖

Dispelling myths about doulas! 🌿✨ Let's set the record straight: Doulas are NOT just for homebirths. They're NOT just for 'crunchy' moms. They're NOT just for low-risk pregnancies. Doulas ARE for any woman who values her autonomy, seeks self-empowerment, and desires guidance during pregnancy and birth.
Doulas support births in all settings—whether it's at home, a birthing center, or a hospital. We're even there for outdoor births! And contrary to popular belief, doulas are also an option for high-risk pregnancies, helping to center the mom's choices and feelings every step of the way.
We're here to help mothers distinguish between immediate risks and perceived risks, which may stem from impatience, misinformation, or personal preferences. Ultimately, our goal is to support you in your journey to a positive birth experience, regardless of where or how you choose to give birth. 💖🤰
Pregnancy and postpartum bring about incredible hormonal changes. It's a time of beautiful transformation🌻, both physically and emotionally. A mother's instincts kick into the highest gear during this delicate period. It becomes her compass, guiding her actions and decisions. 🧭
Sometimes, this may mean mothers setting rules or boundaries that other people (👀) don’t understand or developing a set-in-stone routine. Why? It's not about being “overprotective” or “controlling”; it's about doing what's best, and ensuring their child’s safety and well-being. 🪺
This is a powerful feeling, but it’s 10x more PRIMAL during pregnancy and the postpartum transition. (Thank you amazing hormones for protecting our babies! 🦸♂️) This instinct is out of deep LOVE, and a primal instinct to PROTECT their child. The motherly intuition is a powerful force. Trust it 🙌. It was built into our bodies for a reason!
Any challenge is an automatic threat ⛔️ and guess what? That response is also NORMAL too! It’s a NATURAL instinct. The answer is simple. Being human doesn’t change what is biologically normal - and being normal is simply protecting our babies🐻
For the sake of peace and for the ability to thrive, learning to embrace the amazing ability to say "no" or “yes” to what feels uncomfortable, and what feels right will give you, and your baby, the FREEDOM to THRIVE. Maybe in the past, you've often gone along with what everyone else wanted, but becoming a mother changes all that—and it's a truly beautiful thing. Honor your instincts and create a love-filled haven where you and your kiddos can thrive.
You’ve got this 🌈💪!
Remember, I am here to support and advocate for you along the way ⭐️!
This is by no means an extensive list! Caring for a NICU baby is incredibly difficult in many ways. What kept me sane (as a mild control freak) was becoming heavily involved in my son's care. I did everything for him except his PICC line changes. Diaper changes, wound care, feedings, linen changes, electrode replacements, etc. Do your baby's PT stretches or exercises, like tummy time or hip circles.
✨✨Communicate with the nurses and doctors!!!!✨✨
This is the MOST important way to be involved in your baby's care. You are NOT subordinate to them. You can ask questions, make recommendations, ask for changes! I often asked for pain medication for my son, or brought up issues to the doctors. They are there to help YOU! Advocate for your little one!

I've had so many people say they don't want a doula because they're not having their baby at home! A doula is NOT just for the "crunchy" moms who want a homebirth. A doula shouldn't be instilling fear into hospital births. Your doula should be supporting YOUR decisions, providing resources, and encouraging YOUR choices. My personal preference doesn't matter. Your mom's preference doesn't matter. Your mom groups preference doesn't matter. Even your partners preference doesn't matter (touchy I know!). As a doula, I'm here to support YOU -the person giving birth to a human- to have the birth YOU desire.

Breath—the silent yet powerful force that lays the foundation of birth. Babies are 'breathed' into this world, embraced by the gentle rhythm of natural birth. It's time we reconsider the rush to intervene, recognizing that birthing is as natural as breathing itself. Rather than force, let's trust in the innate wisdom of the birthing process, honoring its organic flow. Embracing this natural rhythm allows us to witness the beauty of birth in its purest form. 🌬️✨
Give a like and follow to explore empowering, unconventional birth insights that celebrate the natural beauty of bringing life into this world!
'Why do I hate the phrase 'Well, at least...'? It's demoralizing. It's unsympathetic. While often meant in kindness, it can inadvertently minimize the complex emotions of parents navigating birth trauma, NICU stays, or challenging situations. A healthy baby isn't the sole goal; emotional well-being matters too. Instead of 'at least,' here are some truly supportive things you can say to someone facing difficult times:
"I'm here for you. How are you feeling today?"
"Your feelings are valid. Take all the time you need."
"It's okay not to feel okay. I'm listening whenever you're ready to talk."
"What can I do to support you right now?"
"I admire your resilience. You're doing the best you can."
"You're not alone in this. I'm here to walk this journey with you."
Let's foster a supportive environment by validating emotions and offering genuine empathy. 💖🌟

Celebrating every milestone in the NICU. 🎉💖 In the midst of the NICU's ups and downs, it's important to pause and celebrate even the smallest victories. Each milestone, no matter how seemingly insignificant, marks a step forward on the path toward bringing your baby home. Despite the length of the NICU journey, every day holds monumental progress and deserves recognition. It's okay to find joy in moments that others may not understand, and it's okay to save certain milestones for celebrating at home. For me, I reserved my son's first true bath in a tub for the comfort of our home, a cherished moment I wanted to experience together outside of the NICU. Every achievement, no matter how small, is a testament to your baby's resilience and worth celebrating and documenting along this journey.🌟✨

4 Reasons to Consider Breastfeeding 🤱💕
💪🏾Faster Postpartum Recovery: Breastfeeding is not only physiologically normal but also aids in postpartum healing. The act of suckling triggers uterine contractions, helping to expel the placenta and shrink the uterus. Additionally, it releases hormones that can prevent baby blues and promote healing.
🫂Bonding and Relaxation: Breastfeeding fosters bonding between mother and baby, thanks to the release of oxytocin, the 'happy hormone.' This closeness not only enhances the bond between mother and child but also with their trusted partner.
💸Cost-Effective: While the cost-effectiveness of breastfeeding is debated, it can save money compared to formula feeding. However, challenges like mastitis or low milk production may incur costs. Preparation for returning to work or seeking feeding assistance may also require investment. Still, breastfeeding offers long-term health benefits that can outweigh costs.
❤️🩹Health Protections: Breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits, including reduced risks of diabetes, asthma, and certain cancers for both mother and baby. It's crucial for babies with gastrointestinal issues, reducing the risk of conditions like NEC, especially in preemies.
Navigating the pressures of breastfeeding can be overwhelming without proper support. Feeling overwhelmed? You're not alone. Prepare for your breastfeeding journey by seeking support from lactation counselors or doulas with lactation training BEFORE birth.
I'm here to guide you—DM me to learn more! 💌💫
There's a trend lately of blaming breastfeeding for postpartum mental health issues. While I understand why some might make this connection, it's not supported by evidence. This idea is often pushed by predatory formula companies and uneducated or unsupportive 'supporters.' Instead of blaming breastfeeding, we should address the real issues: lack of parental leave, inadequate breastfeeding education, immense pressure with little support, and lack of community for parents. By fostering better support systems for parents postpartum, we could see a significant decrease in mental health struggles.
Breastfeeding 101 ❗ It's a beautiful journey, that many often have to seek guidance along the way. While it's natural and seemingly instinctive, breastfeeding can pose challenges. It should be a comfortable, painless partnership between mom and baby. Don't hesitate to ask for help at the first sign of difficulty. Whether it's latch issues, mouth ties, or post-birth effects, early intervention can make all the difference. I'm here to support you every step of the way. 💖

🤱💫 Unlocking the Benefits of Breastfeeding! 💫🤱 Breastfeeding offers numerous advantages, but finding the right position and latch for you and your baby may require some practice. Remember, breastfeeding shouldn't be painful—discomfort could signal an underlying issue. Lactation consultants are invaluable resources, providing guidance on proper technique and addressing any concerns. When it comes to identifying potential mouth ties, seek out experienced TOTS professionals, as these issues can be overlooked by general providers. Additionally, lactation consultants offer support not only for breastfeeding but also for pumping and even formula feeding when needed.
