MAST 2015 Artist Profile - David Hobson
Thanks to David's involvement in MAST years ago, he and his wife Stephanie have become much loved and appreciated pillars in McKinney's arts community. Since he first opened his studio to the public through MAST, he has completed several portrait commissions and developed a following of private drawing students. His beautiful grandchildren are his favorite subjects. When I see how David has captured family relationships and faraway gazes, I'm reminded of Mary Cassatt's exquisitely candid portraits. David paints the love in the heart of his subject.

I love MAST! I consider it the most important art event of the year because through MAST, McKinney folks learn about the artists who live and work right in their neighborhoods, and visitors to McKinney begin to understand the depth of McKinney's community of artists. I remember when Sona Knox convinced me that we could start small, just like the White Rock tour. Look how we've grown. I invite you to my studio, which will be sorted and cleaned just in time.

This week Art in the Market is honored to feature talented painter, Renee Wrenwood. Renee is a fabulous watercolor artist and she will display her work and talent Saturday morning during the McKinney Farmers Market!
"I love the natural world, be it flowers, the human form, or landscapes. As an artist, I feel that it is my calling to express the beauty, the wonderment, and sometimes, the unloveliness, of nature."
"I am attracted to watercolor paintings because of their luminosity and transparency. I choose to work in watercolor because I love the way the paint flows, and because watercolor allows me to explore and play; to challenge myself as an artist. To let the paint and water move on the paper, creating themselves even as I create, is an act of faith, of letting go. Faith in my ability to respond to the natural beauty around me, a letting go of the results, almost a metaphor for all of the letting go I’ve learned to do in life."
"To me, the unexpected, the surprises that the medium presents, the puzzle of how to create my vision, are part of the thrill of watercolor painting. Though I sometimes work in other media, I am always excited to return to the inspiration, the challenge, and the beauty of watercolor."
"I find pure joy in creating. Art is my offering to the world and my salvation from it. When I am immersed in art, I am one with the universe, and life is good!"
Art in the Market is a production of MAST and is held in the beautiful Chestnut Square Historic Village in conjunction with McKinney Farmers Market. This Saturday, September 5th: 8:00am until 12:00 noon.
McKinney Art Studio Tour - MAST
The featured artist for Art in the Market this Saturday is David Hobson. David works in oil and is primarily a portrait and figurative painter.
"I can't remember a time when I wasn't drawing. When I was a kid my mother always knew where to find me - in my bedroom, on the floor, drawing. Usually from a comic book.
Faces have always been fascinating to me, and I still draw bits and pieces of them everywhere. I've probably drawn a million eyes in my life!
The great painters of the past along with many excellent contemporary artists have been my inspiration. Now, by the grace of God, I am doing the thing that I love."
David will also be painting downtown on the Square during Second Saturday.
McKinney Art Studio Tour - MAST
Our second Featured Artist for Saturday is Sherry Daerr, a watercolorist whose work can be seen at her website, www.petportraitsbysherryd.com.
"I had been painting watercolors for several years which included still lives, landscapes and florals. I was struggling with the medium until one day I painted a yellow lab from a photograph I took of a lab sitting in the back of a jeep in Redstone, Colorado. Once I painted the dog, I said, “This is what I need to focus on in my watercolors!” Hence, I launched my Pet Portraits business.
I love painting animals because I have a great compassion for them. It makes all the difference in the world if you are passionate about the subject you are painting. For me, painting animals is painting from the heart. And, painting from the heart is a good thing."

After a rain delay, MAST is proud to finally present "Art in the Market" demonstrator: Jill Luigs, fabric artist.
"After discovering the amount of fabric waste in landfills, I knew I had to change the way I did business. Instead of purchasing new fabrics, I recycle garments from friends' closets, thrift stores and garage sales, and transform them into fresh garments and home decor items such as pillows, wall hangings, and rugs. Instead of throwing away scraps, I create whimsical embellishments for the upcycled items. Even the pillows are stuffed with the smallest scraps. My desire is to impart my love for the environment and my evolving creativity to those who resonate with upcycling and whimsy." Feel free to contact me at [email protected] and see some of my work on Facebook and Etsy.
Art in the Market, a production of MAST, is held each Saturday morning from 8-12 during McKinney Farmers Market in the beautiful Chestnut Square Historic Village.
It's supposed to be sunny this Saturday... head out to Chestnut Square in the morning to the Farmer's Market and Art in the Market.
(Please share this post to help spread the word!)
This Saturday morning at Chestnut Square, Art in the Market is proud to present McKinney artist, Bob Bruu.
Bob is a talented and diverse artist with work ranging from paintings using acrylics, alkyds and watercolors to sketches in graphite and ink, to his latest medium of choice – wood.
"My current focus is on creating wood sculptures using subjects that range from every day use, like a baseball hat, to whimsical subjects like a canoe or bicyle that completes a unique diorama. I've been fortunate to work with a number of well trained wood carvers over the years and learned a lot by sharing a passion for carving. The collection of handcrafted wood sculptures are all created in my workshop in McKinney, TX, using a combination of hand and power carving tools. An average piece can take anywhere from 40 to 200+ hours to carve, using a number of different paints and stains to complete each piece. Creating unique wood realistic sculptures that fool the eye is my passion and goal."
The forecast is sunny at last! Come see Bob and a host of other artists at Art in the Market, a production of MAST, held each Saturday from 8-12 during the McKinney Farmers Market in the beautiful Chestnut Square Historic Village.
