As Pocket John’s historic adventure in South Dakota comes to an end, he visited the Keystone Historical Museum and learned all about Carrie Ingalls Swanzey (Laura Ingalls Wilder’s feisty little sister) as well as Keystone’s mining history. He again was inspired by the beautiful scenery. He ran into a strange skeleton with sharp teeth! Even former presidents enjoyed meeting him! (He met the man who was President the year John and his family built the famous Faires House located now in Chestnut Square Historic Village! Do you know who that was??John especially enjoyed traveling the pigtail roads and seeing the ingenious bridges. He’s ready to board the flying machine to head back to McKinney. So long South Dakota!! Keep your eye out for Pocket Pioneers and their adventures. Go to www.chestnut square.org to download your very own Pocket Pioneer and begin a historic adventure. Be sure to tag Chestnut Square Historic Village on Facebook.
Pocket John Faires’s adventures in South Dakota continue. He learned that 90% of Mount Rushmore was sculpted using dynamite to blast the granite. John Faires would have been part of the crew who worked on this awesome sculpture. Then, down the road, he saw the on going Crazy Horse sculpture. This project began in 1948. The details on this great leader’s face are amazing! In Custer State Park, John rode the Needles Highway and was amazed by the beauty of the formations. He stopped by a ranger station and learned all about the buffalo herds in the park. Stay tuned for his continued adventures. You can start having your own adventures with Chestnut Square’s Pocket Pioneers by going to www.chestnutsquare.org to download one today.

He was right at home as he traveled through a ghost town and then saw rock features that were formed over millions of years! John loved seeing a buffalo and prairie dogs.
