Black Brown Queer Dance at Tufts
A series of dance workshops with Boston-based artists that celebrates and explores the contributions of black, brown, and q***r people to dance.

J Michael Winward is an independent dance artist based in Boston. With influences in ballroom, ballet, contemporary and somatic dance practices, his work places a strong focus on building connection: connection to one’s body, one’s self, one’s audience, connection between dance partners, connection within and across communities. While dancing competitively, Michael advocated for the inclusion of same-sex partnership in mainstream ballroom dance competition. He is a co-producer of "Dancing Q***rly", a festival of workshops, mixers, panel discussions, and performances. Dancing with Peter DiMuro/Public Displays of Motion (PDM), he advances the PDM mission of cultivating dance/arts literacy, advocacy and engagement. Through his program Steps in Time, he brings ballroom dancing to senior, elder, and memory care communities throughout Greater Boston.

Yyoyo is a Roxbury/Boston born native with a raw passion for dance. At the age of 7 she would dance 5 hours straight in parties and win every dance contest she enetered. Dancing on stage and touring with different companies became a way of life at the age 14.
Yyoyo started her career as a backup dancer for local artists and has had the privilege of dancing for Bomb Squad and opening up for various artists such as Elephant Man, Lady Saw and Omarion to name a few.
In 2006 Yyoyo discovered a dance style named Waacking also known as Punking. And after entering several contests over the years, in 2015 she won Ladies of Hip Hop Waacking competition in New York. And has competed and won many of dance competitions before and after. Yyoyo's love for dance, history and self expression has forever changed the way she views performing and thanks her elders, mentors and peers for sharing this culture with her and the world.

Chanel Thompson, Founder, Choreographer for Xbox's "Dance Central" Game and six time awardee of the National Cheerleading Award, established Performancebuild in 2004 to bridge the gap between record labels and talent agencies. The industry was in need of a professional who has a focus on talent development to coach talented professionals to take their career to the next level.

Many of whom have worked and dance with Chanel have taken their careers to the next level by working with talented artists such as Beyonce, Pharrell, La Reid, Chris Brown, and, Jadakiss.

On Monday Oct 15th we welcome Brian Washburn to Tufts!
Brian Washburn, born in Providence, RI, started dance at the age of 7. Self taught in breaking, popping, and acrobatics. In 2015 he moved to Charlotte, NC. There he enrolled into Northwest School of the Arts where he began training in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz. Following his graduation he returned to the Northeast. Brian now teaches for Boston University and The Studio Dance Complex in Revere. He dances with Contemporarily out of Order and performs as a solo artist in and around the Boston area.

TONIGHT: we welcome José Cuadra offering a Brazilian Zouk workshop
BRAZILIAN ZOUK will be taught by José Cuadra.
Zouk is a partner dance originating from Brazil. The dance is a descendant of lambada (the forbidden dance). In this dance you can see a close connection embrace and long graceful steps, strong hip movements, body isolations and upper-body torsions, wild spins and whip-like head movements.
José teaches Zouk, and run a group called Boston Zouk on the Docks, a group of dancers that love zouk and dance outdoors in the summer and in other locations in the winter. José a big believer in teaching and learning both roles for all dances. José also shares this dance with people from all backgrounds and sexual preferences.

Froca Fitness comes to Tufts University tomorrow and we are so lucky to have Sylver Rochelin teaching our class!
'Froca is an exhilirating dance fitness class deriving from both traditional and popular dance, musical and cultural traditions from across Africa and the Caribbean. 'Froca incorporates traditional and urban moves combined with high impact fitness exercises. The high energy class introduces students to the latest dance and musical trends from Africa and the Caribbean, while also exposing students to traditional techniques, deeply rooted in cultures across the continent and the diaspora. Through choreographed numbers, broken down technique, thoughtful warm-ups, and community-driven stretching and cool-downs, the class covers diverse rhythms such as Ndombolo, Coupe decale, Soukous, Gweda, Panstula, Kuduro, Azonto, Shoki, Kizomba, Raga, Dancehall, Soca, Calypso, and more.
Sylver Rochelin Randrianantenaina is a professional dancer from Madagascar, having spent the last decade specializing in Malagasy popular dances, Afropop, Caribbean, Hip Hop, Jazz and contemporary. He has performed with many of Madagascar's most renowned musicians and performers, and has danced with a number of contemporary companies in Madagascar and around the world.
In 2011, Sylver traveled to the renowned dance school Ecole de Sable in Toubab Diallo, Senegal, to participate alongside 42 dancers from across Africa in a three-month intensive training. The training focused on traditional and urban African dances and as well hip-hop and contemporary styles. Sylver then moved to Jerusalem, where he studied classical, modern and contemporary dance for 2 years at the Jerusalem Academy of Music in Dance.
Sylver has taught nightly sold-out classes in Madagascar and Jerusalem and led a number of large events bringing thousands of participants and famous musicians. Sylver has lived here in Cambridge since 2015 and teaches daily dance fitness classes.

Chanel is Currently a Featured Choreographer and Quality Assurance Tester for XboxOne’s NEW Kinect game- Dance Central SPOTLIGHT and Choreographer for Dance Central 1, 2, & 3 franchise exclusively for the Xbox360. As well as being a dancer, Chanel is a singer too. She’s has had the greatest opportunities to perform among the best artists and djs in the business such as: Jordan Knight at KISS 108 FM Concert, Liza Minelli in the Michael Jackson Special, Jay-Z at Hampton University, Eminem -Middle East Cafe, Trey Songz- Twin River Casino, J Holiday- Twin River Casino, Jeremih- Strand Theater/WXPA Radio Augusta Georgia, Charlie Wilson- BBKings NYC, GURU of Gangstarr, Smidi, Rhea Dummett, Jyshoun McNeil, M-Slash, Smoke Bulga, Masspike Miles, Joint Ventures, Jadakiss, Day 26, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Chubby Chub, DJ Clue, and DJ Killatouch to name a few. SASSY HIP HOP will be taught by Chris Suharlim who has been dancing since 2007 and drew inspiration from upbeat pop and k-pop music by amazing artists such as Britney, Lady Gaga, 2ne1, Black Pink, and Girls Generation. He is a public health enthusiast who enjoys dancing to shake the stress away. “It’s my way to stay sane!” said Chris. In 2011 Chris started teaching dance as a cardio class at multiple fitness centers in Indonesia, and has since instructed ‘Sassy Hip Hop’ for Harvard Dance Club, Studio@550, Dance Complex, and private dance groups.
