I wish I could go back to these days with Lilee...
A day on the lake with my beautiful Lilee. She doesn't have much time left, so will make the rest of her days as good as we can. 😭
I want to let my puppy owners know, that if any of my pups are spayed/neutered before ONE (1) year of age, my health guarantee is null and void. I do NOT support early spay/neuter and will never encourage any of my babies to have that done early.
Debunking the Claim: Canine Mammary Tumors are Not Less with Early Spay
Contrary to the claim, the available evidence suggests that early spaying does not reduce the incidence of canine mammary tumors. In fact, multiple studies have shown that spaying at an early age can actually increase the risk of developing mammary tumors.
Evidence from Studies
A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found that dogs spayed at an early age (before their first heat cycle) had a higher incidence of mammary tumors compared to dogs spayed later in life (after their first heat cycle) [1].
Another study published in the Journal of Comparative Pathology reported that early spaying (before 6 months of age) was associated with a higher risk of developing mammary tumors in female dogs [2].
A review of 183 canine mammary tumors published in the journal Veterinary Pathology found that AKT1 mutations, which are associated with mammary tumor development, were present in 9% of tumors, regardless of spaying status [3].
Risk Factors for Canine Mammary Tumors
Obesity
Exogenous hormone supplementation (e.g., progestins)
Breed (e.g., toy and miniature poodles, spaniels, and German shepherds)
Conclusion
The claim that early spay reduces the incidence of canine mammary tumors is unfounded and contradicts the available scientific evidence. Early spaying may actually increase the risk of developing mammary tumors in female dogs. It is essential to focus on established risk factors and consider individual factors when making decisions about spaying or neutering.

Not at all happy to be back at the vet, and she had to be sedated to remove the drain as she was not having that. I expect a repeat next week when she needs the stitches removed...
