Relaxed muscles are more receptive to sensory feedback and can provide more accurate proprioceptive information.

Massage can improve proprioceptive information in other ways, too:

Tactile stimulation activates the sensory receptors, as do ROM exercises, increased circulation lead to improved nerve health and function and the increased attention elicited by focused attention on each body part can improve proprioceptive information.

Massage therapy is a great way to improve proprioception.

Some much needed shoulder, head, and neck work for this cute little mare ๐Ÿ’—

This mare has been very stiff on her left side lately. Having trouble picking up her left lead and dropping her shoulder going into her barrels. I started by massaging and releasing built up tension in her left shoulder, which seemed to alleviate a good portion of her pain, but continued to work up her neck all the way to her head. The compensation from having limited range of motion in that shoulder was leading to muscle tension and tightness all the way up her neck and into her poll. After this session, Livvy is now back to running and feeling her best!

Some benefits of equine massage:
๐Ÿฆ„ Removal of built up lactic acid and metabolic waste
๐Ÿฆ„ Increased circulation
๐Ÿฆ„ Relief of tension in the muscle tissue
๐Ÿฆ„ Increased range of motion

Hello all!
I am here in CDA at the High School Rodeo and will be here all day today, tomorrow, and Sunday morning. I have a table set up with a small banner on it and am located along the fence, next to a Chevy pickup with a camper. I have a sign up sheet at my table with available time slots, I will not be accepting appointments through messages so please come find my table to sign up for a session! Itโ€™s best to figure out when youโ€™re up in your events and decide if you want a pre or post-event massage for your horse. If you want a pre-event massage please be very cautious of time as each massage takes 1 hour and then I would add an extra 15 minutes for my palpation and intake questions.
Please keep in mind that I am still a student, currently in school to obtain my license for equine massage. These sessions are FREE! I am educated and have many sessions under my belt already, however this is my first time in an event setting so please bare with me!

There are a lot of mechanical devices marketed towards equine bodywork. Hereโ€™s why hands are better:

Fingertips are supremely sensitive to touch, pressure and texture. This is due to a high density of specialized nerve endings called Meissner's corpuscles and Merkel cells, located in the skin of the fingertips. These nerve endings are highly responsive to changes in pressure, texture, temperature and vibrations, allowing us to detect fine details and textures with our fingertips.

Using my hands allows me detect subtle changes in the temperature and texture of the tissue, to feel subtle movements, to adjust speed, pressure and technique as the tissue responds to my work. No device can do that.

Developing feel takes a lot of practice, but is an invaluable skill to massage, myofascial release and bodywork.

Helping horses of all disciplines improve performance and stay sounder and happier longer.

Massage with myofascial release can improve muscle function, joint alignment, self-awareness, mobilize fascia, increase stride length and range of motion, enhance relaxation and improve overall performance and recovery.

The weather is finally warming up and so are the horses โ˜€๏ธ
Maintenance massages are not just for your hard working equine athletes, it can also be for your horses who are now retired and are spending their days out in the pasture. Think about the amount of muscle mass being lost from no longer using their muscles like they once were. Regular massage sessions can improve the longevity and overall health of the soft tissue, therefore making that stiff, broken down muscle tissue strong again and keeping them feeling good! Take care of the old ones that always took care of you ๐Ÿ’›

As we start moving out of this cold weather into spring and begin legging up our horses to get them in shape for the up coming season, just remember how hard that can be on their bodies and how the wonderful effects massage can help ease them through that process. ๐Ÿด
Being so close to graduation I am trying to gain as much extra hands on experience as I can with as many different horses as I can, that being said I am available for practice sessions until I graduate! If you would like more info, feel free to DM me! ๐Ÿ’—

Latest blog on whyVitamin E matters โ€œOver my professional career Iโ€™ve only run across a handful of products that Iโ€™ve fed to my horses that made a difference I could not only see but feel. I consider Equine Omega Complete and Equine Omega Vitamin E to be a major key to my horses physically performing their best. The customer service that they exhibit truly shows their concern for my horseโ€™s overall health and well-being.โ€ Matt Mills, NRHA Million Dollar Rider, WEG Gold Medalist

This is a great exercise to do in-hand. Walking over a raised pole requires greater flexion in your horse's joints than trotting.

Place a raised pole, or small log in a place where you can regularly walk your horse over it - for example to and from the field.

๐Ÿด Gradually raise it until it's around knee height.

Did you know that a horse that hasn't been how to properly support and carry the weight of a rider will instinctually hollow their back away from the weight of the rider? Many riding horses spend their entire careers going around with hollow backs, even upper level competition horses.

Carrying weight with a hollow back is, at best, uncomfortable for the horse, and in many cases is actually quite painful. Many horses tolerate this discomfort because they don't know any alternative. Other horses develop behavioral problems and become labeled as bad horses.

For a horse to remain healthy and comfortable in his work he must be taught how to support the weight of a rider with first a neutral back and then later on with a lifted back. This is a process that takes time, as you can't rush muscle development.

I've found that the best way to teach a horse to lift his back is on the ground first, through classical in hand work. Without the extra weight of the rider, it is easier for the horse to learn how to lift his back and it is easier for him to develop the strength that he needs in order to maintain a lifted back for an extended amount of time.

Once the horse has and understanding of this healthier posture and has developed some strength, it will be much easier for him to accomplish the same thing with a rider on his back.

The horse will then feel more comfortable and have an easier time performing his job. He will be less prone to injuries and behavioral problems and he will be able to continue doing his job for much longer than if he never learned to move in a healthy way.

As stewards of our horses, we owe it to them to give them the best lives possible. That includes taking the time to teach them how to move in a way that is healthy and comfortable for them.

Want to learn more about the horse's back and how you can teach him a healthy posture? We invite you to join our Healthy Movement through In Hand Work course, available in our Virtual Classroom. You'll learn how you can help your horse to move in a healthier way through the use of In Hand Work.

This work is beneficial for horses of all ages, breeds, and disciplines and no previous experience is necessary.

The 18 thoracic vertebrae are comparatively rigid and inflexible. Itโ€™s this strength and rigidity of the spine in this area that allows us to ride our horses.

The spinous processes of the thoracic vertebrae are longest at the withers. These provide bony attachment areas and leverage for the muscles, acting as a fulcrum for the nuchal and supraspinous ligaments that influence the position of the head and neck.

18 pairs of ribs attach to the 18 thoracic vertebrae via synovial joints.

The first 8 pairs of ribs house and protect the heart and lungs, are known as true ribs. They join on to the sternum and allow the chest cavity to expand and deflate as your horse breathes.

The other 10 pairs of ribs are known as false ribs โ€“ each pair attaches by a ligament and cartilage connection not to the sternum but to the pair of ribs in front.

The ribs also contribute to bend โ€“ coming closer together on the inside and further apart on the outside of the bend.

Did you know there are over 700 different muscles in the horseโ€™s body! Although we do not memorize every single muscle, we try to learn most of them (where they originate, where they insert, and their function). As a massage therapist it is very important to have a general knowledge of the major muscles in the different parts of the body.
Today in class, we spent the morning reviewing some muscles from first and second quarter. Obviously I am not 100% solid on these muscle and being on camera gives me a little bit of stage fright, so there are some errors. However, I thought Iโ€™d step outta my comfort zone to make a short clip to share with everyone!

Welcome to Stable Pressure Massage and Bodywork!
My name is Paige Fisher and I am currently a student at Langley Equine Studies. I am over half-way through the program and I plan to graduate in June to become a licensed equine massage therapist. Though I am not yet licensed, I thought it would be fun to get my business page up and going so I can share all the things that I have been learning!
The bodywork I am doing includes Swedish Massage, myo-fascial release, stretching, trigger point and stress point therapy. These techniques can have many benefits for the horse like increased range of motion, increased circulation, decreased pain and improved overall muscular health.
I would love to answer any questions you may have about equine massage and bodywork! Thank you all for your support ๐Ÿ’—
