The “Don’t Wait. Reach Out.” campaign aims to share important messages and resources about su***de prevention for Veterans. During Su***de Prevention Month, supporters are encouraged to use hashtags such as , ***dePreventionMonth, and . Additionally, hashtags like ***dePrevention, ***deAwareness, , and can be used in relevant posts throughout the month and year-round. Graphics to accompany these messages can be downloaded from the campaign toolkit.
For Veterans, the campaign emphasizes that life has its challenges, but they don’t have to face them alone. Veterans are often the first to help others but may find it hard to ask for help themselves. If you or a Veteran you know needs support, don’t wait. Reach out and visit www.VA.gov/REACH for resources. It’s okay to ask for help, and resources are available to support Veterans across life’s challenges. If you’re a Veteran who may be struggling, do for yourself what you’d do for others and reach out today.
For other organizations and non-Veterans, the campaign highlights that everyone can be part of the solution by checking in with Veterans and encouraging them to seek help if needed. Let them know that resources are available at www.VA.gov/REACH. Su***de is preventable, and everyone can contribute by spreading the word about available resources. Veterans are trained to be resilient, which can make it hard for them to ask for help. If you know a Veteran who’s struggling, encourage them to explore the resources available. The “Don’t Wait. Reach Out.” campaign encourages Veterans to seek help before they’re in crisis.
For family and loved ones of Veterans, the campaign stresses that Veterans are often the first to help others but may find it hard to ask for help themselves. Take time to reach out and check in with the Veterans in your life. People close to Veterans are often the first to notice when they are struggling. Letting a Veteran know you’re there for them can start a conversation. If a Veteran you know is struggling, don’t wait. Reach out and visit www.VA.gov/REACH for resources for friends and family of Veterans. Su***de is preventable, and we all have a role to play in helping save Veteran lives. If you have a Veteran in your life who may be struggling, resources are available to help you start a conversation today.

Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour public education program designed to teach participants about the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health issues in adolescents. The course emphasizes the importance of early intervention and equips individuals with the skills to help adolescents in crisis. Through role-playing and simulations, participants learn to assess mental health crises, select appropriate interventions, and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help resources. The curriculum covers various mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, ADHD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder. Participants are trained to support youth by applying a five-step action plan: assessing for risk of su***de or harm, listening nonjudgmentally, giving reassurance and information, encouraging professional help, and promoting self-help and other support strategies. The program is primarily aimed at adults who interact with adolescents, such as teachers, school staff, coaches, youth group leaders, and parents, but is also being tested for older adolescents. Since its inception, the course has trained over 175,000 people across the USA. It is coordinated by the National Council for Behavioral Health, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the Missouri Department of Mental Health, with input from experts at Georgetown University.

In the article "Sleep, Nutrition and Breathing: The 3 Most Important Natural Things to Improve Job Performance and Longevity," published on Military.com on July 29, 2024, Stew Smith, CSCS®, emphasizes the critical role of sleep, nutrition, and breathing in enhancing job performance and longevity, particularly for active-duty service members. Smith explains that tactical fitness is essential for those in tactical professions to perform their duties effectively and ensure their own safety and that of others. Maintaining physical fitness is crucial not only for job performance but also for long-term health and career longevity. As service members age, especially into their 30s and 40s, the ability to recover from physical and mental stress diminishes, making it imperative to prioritize recovery through adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and effective breathing techniques. Mastering these three elements is fundamental to managing stress and maintaining overall health and wellness throughout one's career and beyond.
