"HOW TO SPOT AND AVOID TEXT, PHONE, AND ONLINE SCAMS
No one is entirely protected from fraud attempts. Cybercriminals are constantly changing their techniques and topics to achieve their nefarious goals. Here is what cybersecurity experts say you can do to spot a text, phone, or online scam, and what to do about it.
Bring family members together. Let them know they can come to you to check a suspicious text, call, or email—or if they think they have fallen for a scam. Reassure them there is nothing to be ashamed about—like any crime, this is not the victim’s fault.
Keep up with the latest frauds. Know what new scams are trending: get updates at sites such as Fraud.org, FTC Consumer Alerts, and the AARP fraud site. Scammers frequently use current events, such as aid for disaster relief, to seem legitimate.
Signs that something is a scam:
The text, direct message, email, or call comes out of the blue.
They say you won money, a prize, or are getting a refund.
The message makes you feel panicked. Scammers like to sound urgent.
A fast payment method is involved. Criminals want the money fast, using peer-to-peer apps (Venmo, Cash App, Zelle); wire transfers; prepaid gift cards; cryptocurrency; or cash.
They claim there are payment problems. Hang up and verify the source.
They ask for information. Again, hang up and verify with the source they claim to be.
Something just does not feel right.
Verify everything. Always assume the people or companies contacting you are not who they say they are. Do not reply to texts or calls or click links from unknown sources. To confirm an identity, contact them on a different channel. If it was a Facebook message, send a text. If it was a phone call, call back on the company’s main number or the customer service number on their website. Or call AARP on 877-908-3360 and ask about the possible fraud.
Change your settings to frustrate scammers.
Set social media profiles to private. If you need a public facing profile on one of these platforms, remove your location and contact information.
Facebook. Go to Settings & Privacy -- Followers and Public Content -- “Who can see the people, pages, and lists you follow?” -- select Friends or Only Me.
Messenger. Tap profile photo and select Privacy -- Message Delivery -- under Other People -- click on Others on Facebook -- select Don’t Receive Request.
Instagram. Under Potential Connections, set categories to Don’t Receive Requests or Message Requests to limit how many connections can message you directly.
WhatsApp. Go to Settings -- Account -- Privacy. Limit who can add you to groups, and who can see your personal information and status.
Phone Contacts. Add all known contacts to your Contacts, so you can readily ignore unknown numbers. Then send all unknown callers to Voicemail. On iPhone, go to Settings -- Phone -- Silence Unknown Callers. On Android phones, open Phone app, tap menu button (three dots), then Settings. Most Android phones will have options for blocking numbers, and caller ID and spam protection. Make sure your Voicemail message is set up."

There's A Simple Way To Feel Happier, According To The New Science Of Emotion : Shots - Health News : NPR
Here is an excerpt :
"Three ways to practice happiness:
Psychologists say you can improve your well-being if you recognize moments of positive feelings, value them and seek them out more often. Below, find a few other ideas for cultivating positive emotions and turning happiness into a habit. To explore more ideas, check out NPR's Joy Generator.
1) Share some appreciation: Campos recommends this simple practice. Get together with some friends and write out on cards three things that you're grateful for in the other person. Then share the cards with each other.
"We're using this task right now in my laboratory, and it seems to be very evocative of positive emotion," she says. And though the data is preliminary, she says, "what we see so far is that people enjoy writing what they appreciate in others, and they enjoy sharing it with the other person. It seems to be affirming bonds." Sometimes it even ends in hugs.
2) Take an awe walk: Take a five-minute walk outside each day where you intentionally shift your thoughts outward. Turn off your cellphone or even better don't bring it with you. "Focus your attention on small details of the world around you," psychologist Piercarlo Valdesolo at Claremont McKenna College suggests. Look for things that are unexpected, hard to explain and delightful.
For example, take a moment and find a crack in the sidewalk, where a w**d is poking out, Barrett says. And let yourself feel awe at the power of nature. "Practice that feeling over and over again," she says. "Practice feeling awe at colorful clouds, an intricate pattern on a flower or the sight of a full moon."
3) Listen to a calm concert: A recent meta-analysis from the University of Michigan found that sounds of nature, including birdsongs and water sounds, lower stress, promote calmness and improve mood. Find a bench in your neighborhood under a tree or near water. Sit down, close your eyes and consciously listen to the natural sounds around you. Listen for birdsongs, rustling wind or trickling water. Try sitting for at least five minutes whenever you get a chance. Allow and enjoy calm to wash over you."
