Bone Health....
Over supplementation of calcium may not be a good option as it comes with health risks. According to Dr. Mastaheh Sharafi, women over 50 should be getting their calcium from food and ensuring we supplement the other supportive bone-health nutrients such as vit D3, K2, magnesium, and boron. A multivitamin (without calcium) is a good route.
Calcium-rich foods: plain yogurt/cheese/milk, seeds, nuts, kidney beans, spinach, turnip greens.
As an herbalist I also like to mention calcium-rich herbs that are highly absorbable. SWHERB.COM has a great "bone-builder" tea blend including fennel, rosehips, lemongrass, nettle, raspberry, among others.
As estrogen lowers in women (esp. post-menopause), bone density becomes increasingly harder to maintain. The calcium we get from food has a hard time reaching our bones if we don't have sufficient vitD levels which promotes absorption of calcium. VitD comes from some fish, sun exposure and supplementation including fortified foods. And don't forget other bone-building tips: weight-bearing exercise and avoid/limit tobacco/alcohol.
