This is the dynamic to which I often refer...

According to a 2022 study from the University of Cambridge, plants are now flowering about a month earlier than they were less than 40 years ago in the mid-1980s.

I can see this happening in my garden right now. We’ve had unusually warm temperatures this year here in northern Kentucky, and my plants seem to think it’s a few weeks earlier than it actually is.

These photos are of the same plant on the same day one year apart. In the 2023 photo, you can see the plant is starting to produce flower buds. In the 2024 photo, there are quite a few fully developed flowers.

Widespread early blooms can disrupt wildlife feeding cycles and plant/pollinator relationships.

It also puts plants at risk of getting knocked out by a frost, as many non-cold hardy plants have started blooming long before last frost dates.

Agriculture is also affected by changes to the traditional farming schedule, confused pollinators, and increased crop pests and diseases.

2023 was the hottest year globally in at least 125,000 years. 2024 is on track to beat last year’s record.

Killing your lawn, planting native, avoiding synthetic garden chemicals, and improving soil health are all ways we can make a difference to help save our planet 🌎✨

I'm always curious about plant/insect relationships... here is an association about which I've held an interest since first meeting Dalea hallii.
Today while scouting a new population this Reakirt's Blue came along and solved part of my mystery!

Without a doubt we have the nicest folks come to visit us at the nursery... some know a lot about natives, others nothing but there's always stories and knowledge shared. We humbly Thank all the friends, new and old, that support what we do.

I'll be on another project this week but while he's here on break from Cornell Akash will be on site... see the flier for details.

Echinacea pallida... Pale coneflower.
You can see where it got it's species epithet, that pale pink skirt. That pollen color is a key indicator along with how it holds it's petals.. blown-up like Marilyn Monroe.
Maybe it should be Echinacea monroeii??

Wonder what this costs? Native pollinators are free... and prettier.

A six-armed robot for precision pollination Over the past decades, dozens of animal species have become extinct, while thousands of others are now at risk of disappearing. Endangered species include various pollinators, including bees and some types of moths, butterflies, and flies.

Very calm demeanor... sorry for the sirene noise.

Finding and driving to the prairie remant, collecting the seeds... cleaning, sorting and manipulating them to germinate... sowing the seed flats, dibble and transfer... many, many steps before they sell.

But we LOVE it ALL because we love our mission:
To provide, as close as possible, the botanical genetics with which our native fauna co-evolved.

We also support all native plant nurseries, there are many fine one's out there. Go Native!!

Photos from Randy Johnson Organics's post 03/22/2024

WOW!!! These are pictures of the very rare Dalea hallii that were rescued from developers and were reintroduced onto protected sites... bare roots when installed last year and they're breaking dormancy very nicely!! So satisfying to see that many have survived the process... we'll continue monitoring these populations... waiting now for some flowers!! .adam

Passiflora incarnata, Passionvine
Great native vine... big, beautiful purple flower... host plant for the Gulf fritillary butterfly... but beware: Give it room. This vine suckers off it's main and lateral roots and once you have it, you've got it. Container it to control it, raise it, get the weepholes off the dirt or it will run out!
