Last week, second graders in Ms. Natalie Ott’s class designed and built cardboard arcade games. Their fellow Lower Schoolers enjoyed playing on these one-of-a-kind game consoles. The kindergarten class planted some mystery seeds that recently sprouted! The children observed their seed, made comments about the seed, and planted it. After approximately seven weeks, the class was excited to see sprouts and made new guesses. Finally, students compared the notes they made with images of plants. KA discovered their mystery seed was a pepper plant!

Second grade has been collecting items to help homeless animals in the care of the @jeffersonspca. Students learned about the mission and services of the Jefferson SPCA and created flyers to inform their fellow students of the collection drive. Budding scientists in our George Cottage 3s loved seeing the chemical reaction that takes place when they add vinegar on top of baking soda “shamrocks.” As the carbon dioxide escaped and the bubbles cleared, our 3s were excited to find a gold coin hidden inside. Not only does this fun experiment capture their natural curiosity and wonder, but also using a pipette to drop the vinegar helps build fine motor skills including hand strength and coordination. #stmsaints #youngscientists #georgecottage #earlychildhood #earlychildhood learning

Today, students in Mrs. Allison Thomas’s Upper School arts classes created pottery in the Raku style. This style of pottery generally refers to a type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Pieces are removed from the kiln while at bright red heat and placed in containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay. The technique also produces cracking—known as crackling since it is deliberate. Today’s weather was perfect for classes to gather outside to complete this project. #stmsaints #stmarts #theartsatstm #campusofopportunity
