Joaquin was diagnosed with scoliosis and is being treated with a brace.  We just loved the patriotic design of his brace during this 4th of July weekend. Keep up the great work Joaquin, so proud of you.

Not every person who has scoliosis needs to be treated, but when curves are measured between 25 and 40 degrees and a child still has significant growth left, the decision is made to proceed with bracing. Several research studies show that bracing for scoliosis can keep spinal curves from growing large enough to require surgery by the time a child is done growing.  A brace is worn until the spine stops growing, the timing varies from person to person. Your doctor checks the brace and the status of growth every 4-6 months.

Samantha had a great Valentine’s Day and was kind enough to share this picture with us. She is just 4 days post spinal fusion for scoliosis and kyphosis and we are loving her big smile. She’s one of our scoliosis warriors. Samantha has scoliosis and a complex medical history, despite bracing her curve progressed to 72-degrees. The decision was made to proceed with surgery and she has done remarkably well. We are so proud of her.

My daughter had her surgery this past month and I was worried and scared at first like most parents, but the doctor ,Dr.Thomas Errico and his nurse Alejandra gave us so much confidence that it made the process easier. An important part of spinal fusion for scoliosis is carefully planning what levels are appropriate to fuse for each individual patient. We discuss the operative plan for each child undergoing surgery individually, to ensure the best possible outcome. We expect residual lumbar curves, as in Marylin’s case, to improve through the first year after surgery. Preserving lumbar levels ensures patients retain their flexibility. Maylin is one year post-op here and despite COVID, is doing amazing. We are so happy to see our patients doing so well.

Lumbar disc herniations can happen in children, and although they are not always bothersome, they can sometimes be very painful and disrupt the daily activities of a child or adolescent. The first line of treatment is through conservative treatments like physical therapy and the use of certain medications aimed at diminishing inflammation. When these treatments fail and the pain persists to a level of debilitating pain, surgery is considered. Microdiscectomy is achieved by using a microscope which allows us to fix the disc herniation through a small incision. Surgery is a small part of the solution, prevention through lifestyle modifications will ensure children who have this condition can live a life free of pain.

Discos lumbares herniados son una condición que puede ocurrir en niños y adolescentes y a pesar que muchas veces no causan dolor, hay situaciones en que el dolor se vuelve debilitante e impide que estos niños continúen sus actividades de vida diaria. La primera línea de tratamiento son conservativos, desde terapia física hasta medicinas que ayudan a rebajar la inflamación. Cuando estos tratamientos fallan y el dolor persiste hasta ser debilitante, se considera hacer cirugía. Una microdiscectomia puede lograrse con el uso de un microscopio intraoperativo. Este instrumento nos ayuda a arreglar el disco herniado por una incisión muy pequeña. Cirugía es una parte muy pequeña de la solución, prevención por medio de cambios hacia una vida más saludable, asegura que niños con esta condición vivan una vida sin dolor

Adam has quadriplegic cerebral palsy. CP patients are very prone to developing neuromuscular scoliosis. As it progresses the scoliosis negatively impacts the ability of his parents to care for him. The decision to intervene with surgical correction is based on the clinical impact of the deformity on the patient and his caregivers. He is now 3 months post-op and his parents are amazed at how well he is doing. Both his digestion and breathing have improved as well as his ability to tolerate his daily activities in a positive way. WE are so happy to see Adam doing so well this early.
Adam’s parents are an example of how to respond to adversity. They have started a foundation that funds 2 scholarships at FAU, the speech masters program and ESE teachers undergrad program. Two specialties that have helped Adam immensely. The Foundation is establishing systems for the care of developmentally disabled individuals in need of therapeutic, medical and hospital services by assisting in the funding for the creation of clinics and the training of specialized clinical staff.

Alessandra is 3 months post surgery here. She is now 6 months out and doing everything a 14 year old does. Through everything, she never stopped smiling. Keep bringing light to the world with your smile Alessandra. We are so proud of you.

Meet Ava, she came all the way from Virginia so we could help her get back to her life. She was diagnosed with a high grade spondylolisthesis with pain to her left leg. Which means one of her vertebra had considerably slipped. This caused her pain but also stopped her from being able to cheer. The most commonly suggested procedure, involves fusing two levels and the pelvis. We were able to restrict her fusion to a single level. This is Ava 2 days after surgery and 4 days after surgery. She is back home now and doing amazing. We can’t wait to see where life takes you Ava. Reach for your dreams. We’ve got your back.
