When I dye the fabric I leave it to soak up the colors. A couple days at the most.
Sometimes I get impatient because I am looking forward to see the outcome, and cut rubber bands or thread early. Once the first hot wash is through the second wash is hot also.
The dryer set on high heat will be the at good seal of the color to the cloth.

When washing your tie dye masterpiece washing with light colors and mild detergent. Color may still leak but that is normal.
