Be careful out there Tuesday 8/10/21 looks to be a doozy
Warm temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s will combine with a very humid air mass to produce dangerous conditions Tuesday afternoon. Widespread heat index values are expected to be in 100 to 105 degree range with the potential for values to approach 110 degrees across portions of south central Wisconsin.
What's that - Riveredge Nature Center has a cactus?! Multiple cacti, even?!
It's true, the Prickly Pear (Opuntia humifusa) is a cactus listed as Threatened in Wisconsin and which we have flourishing at Riveredge. More commonly seen in western Wisconsin, some of our sandier, farming-degraded soil hilltops with complete sunlight appeared to provide suitable habitat for these uncommon species, and a couple of decades after planting they're still here doing well.
These prickly pears are generally located in sections far off-trail, and hidden by taller grasses and sedges, so you'll just have to trust our photographic documentation for the time being. But isn't it remarkable that in view of the Milwaukee River, and just down the road from Lake Michigan, one can find healthy populations of cacti?!
🐝 great pollinators!
Right now is swarming season for honeybees, just like this honeybee at the Riveredge Farm. Don't worry...they don't mean to bother of endanger you, they're just looking for a place to bee. No need to spray them to scatter, they'll bee gone soon enough...or you can always contact a beekeeper to come help them out.
Enjoy this wonderful natural world and bee kind to our pollinator friends!
It might feel like March outside but how about this sunset!? 🔥
Oh, MAY.
2/9 8:54pm: Now that the cold has set in the ice is forming on Lake Michigan. Just a few weeks ago there was barely any ice, today over 20% of the lake is covered. Ice continues to build starting at the shoreline. Don't venture out on the ice, however, as it is still very thin. Expect more ice in the coming weeks. -Tom Wachs

The more you know!
Since we've got a chance at a mix of wintry precipitation on the way, we thought it might be a good idea to explain how different types of wintry precipitation form. It all starts up in the clouds (top of the image). At that altitude, it’s cold enough that snow is almost always coming out of the clouds this time of year.
If the air is less than 32 degrees all the way to the ground, the snow falling from the clouds will reach the ground (far right of image).
If there is a shallow layer of warm air situated between the snow-producing clouds and cold air at the surface, you get sleet (middle right). This happens because the snow will melt as it falls through the warm air, and then re-freeze as it falls through the cold air.
If there is a deep layer of warm air between the snow-producing clouds and cold air at the surface, you get freezing rain (middle left). This is because the snow will melt in the warm layer and will not have time to refreeze before hitting the ground. That means it will reach the ground as rain, but since the surface is below freezing, the rain will freeze on impact, making for very slippery conditions.
