That’s tree crew leader Vaughn Mehler at our company tree climbing competition in Grafton today! Next weekend crew members Marcus Dahms, Will Young and Cam Miller are headed north for the Wisconsin Arborist Association’s state competition. It’s about more than speed-safety is also part of the point system for scoring. Devin our Landscape Manager is doing air tilling on a pair of serviceberry bushes that are struggling in heavy clay. The Air Spade uses compressed air at 140psi to loosen up about 10 inches down into the soil, which lets air, water and nutrients get to the roots. This tool is also used for root collar excavation where stem girdling roots are choking out the tree’s nutrient flow over time. After air tilling, Devin rakes the loose soil back into place around the tree or shrub to tidy things up.
