Paul had a great time playing this 1683 Francesco Ruggeri cello from the National Music Museum. (TL-15738). “It plays incredibly well. Its sound is one of real beauty.” We’re thankful for our great relationship with the NMM and the chance to interact with such beautiful instruments.

Recently Claire Givens and Andrew Dipper, who serve on the National Music Museum board of trustees, had the opportunity to preview the Robert Cancelosi Collection, gifted by his son Ken Cancelosi. This collection includes five cellos and 27 bows plus archival materials. Featured here is a video of Dr. Sonja Kraus, Assistant Professor of Cello/Bass at the University of South Dakota, playing the oldest cello in the collection, made by Francesco Ruggeri in Cremona 1683.

In the last weeks, we had the pleasure of hearing a Qin (ancient Chinese stringed instrument) made by Ji Sheng in 2017. James Chang, who is a doctoral student in conducting at the U of MN, played “Three Repetitions of the Plum Blossom Melody” (梅花三弄 Meihua Sannong), 1868 version, on a Qin gifted to Andrew by its maker, Ji Sheng. It was a delight to hear this beautiful instrument.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Givens Violins! Matt and Marie are celebrating with a song from Ireland’s National composer, Turlough O’Carolan. Legend says that this gloriously joyful piece was composed as a response to a challenge posed by Francesco Geminiani, an Italian violinist and composer who wanted to see who could compose the best piece in the shortest timeframe. Matt is playing our 16” Andrzej Sweitlinski and Marie on the 15 ½”, both priced at $9,500. Matt is using a Silveria bow at $1,355 and Marie is using a Camilo Herculano at $990. We encourage you to come in and try these instruments out and show us your favorite Irish tunes! Contact us at [email protected] for an appointment.

The Suzuki Foam Violin created by Otto Musica is a great tool for teachers of very young violin students. Young children can learn to safely hold and care for a violin and bow and develop the large and fine motor coordination and rhythmic understanding necessary to play the violin, as well as instilling confidence and a sense of ownership of “their violin!” Beth Hassler, Givens Violins staff member and Suzuki teacher, explains why she loves using a foam violin when teaching preschoolers and kindergarteners in this video. Our foam violin and bow retails for $45.00.

Bender endpins
The Bender endpin is designed to optimize sound quality and resonance of the cello. The plug screws into the end block as opposed to being held by tension. This, in addition to the 360-degree collet-style grip of the rod, allows for a more consistent resonance to the overall sound of the instrument. Choice of rod materials includes carbon fiber, titanium, aluminum, and steel. Each has a notable impact on sound colors and are interchangeable. www.givensviolins.com
