Inflammation! Aw the infamous word. We hear the word quite often on podcasts, on social media, in health journals, and in our discussion with our friends. Even without knowing too much about what inflammation is, somehow we always associate it with a negative context.

We hear in conversation that sugar or gluten are inflammatory, and that we should avoid foods like these. We hear that conditions such as Hashimoto’s or Ulcerative Colitis are identified as inflammatory, and that we should work to address inflammation.

We hear that we can have inflammatory relationships, and that we should create better boundaries. We might hear a doctor saying that when the ankle we twisted in a game of volleyball is red and swollen, it’s inflamed.

Yeah, we know the word inflammation, but do we really know what inflammation is? It seems that it can mean a lot of things but at the same time, nothing at all.

@dr.danielle.nd breaks it down today.

During a recent intake exam, I (@dr.cassiewilder) was chatting with one of my patients (let’s call her Sarah). Sarah had seen almost every doctor imaginable, from conventional and integrative to acupuncturists and energy healers—the whole nine yards! 👉️But no one seemed to be able to figure out how she could have “perfect” thyroid labs and be on nutritional thyroid support, but still have symptoms of hypothyroid.👈️ As we continued talking, I noticed a pattern: Her thyroid problems would get better for a little while, and then boom! They’d resurface and hit her like a ton of bricks. 🔹Her hair would fall out in clumps, 🔹She’d feel like her feet were made of cement when walking up the stairs, and 🔹She’d suffer from such bad brain fog that she’d need to write explicit to-do lists for her work tasks. Sound like you? If your thyroid labs are "perfect" (aka in a conventionally "normal" range) but you're still having symptoms, it's NOT JUST YOU. It could be something deeper, like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the autoimmune condition where your body fights against your own thyroid gland. Head here to find out how we finally diagnosed Sarah, and what we did to help her get back on her feet—and out of a cycle of brain fog, hair loss, and extreme fatigue: https://mplsimc.com/an-integrative-approach-to-healing-hashimotos/ #chronicillness #womenshealth #hormonebalance #hormones #holistichealth #inflammation #chronicfatigue #autoimmune

🎤 drop... You might not have expected an integrative medicine practitioner to *recommend* hormone replacement therapy. Thing is, HRT has come a loooooooong way. Here's the updated, HOLISTIC perspective we take: Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (bHRT) often gets lumped in with its predecessor, plain ol’ hormone replacement therapy, which traditionally utilizes synthetic or manufactured hormones. And it used to mean that: The term “bioidentical hormone therapy” (HRT) began as a marketing term for custom-compounded hormones. Now, it usually refers to compounds that have the same chemical and molecular structure as hormones that are produced in the body. Plus, many compounding pharmacies can utilize very clean bases to put hormones in, including coconut oil (which kinda eliminates the "putting unnatural things in your body" argument). Just google “life expectancy over time graphs” and you’ll see that our overall life expectancy has been increasing dramatically over the years—we’ve never really lived this long. Some of these geriatric-based symptoms or conditions (including some of the effects of meno / perimenopause) are relatively new. 🤯 Researchers have also historically not included women in many research studies pre-1950s, so what we know about the impact of women’s hormones on women’s biochemistries as we age is also relatively new. Put those two together and what you do get? A tiny slice of feminism: If taking bHRT can improve the quality of life for women as we age, is that not holistic? I’d argue it IS. BUT THERE'S SO MUCH MORE TO CONSIDER. Unpopular opinion: Cheap supplements with fillers like sawdust that you can pick up at the drugstore are most people’s first line of defense and supplements can easily become more harmful than helpful. So HOW should you shop for supplements? Your best bet is a reputable source like your doctor's office, BUT if you need something NOW, we pulled together a shopping guide for supplements. It's all here: https://mplsimc.com/how-to-choose-the-best-supplements-for-you/ #healthyliving #healthyeating #mymimc

Daylight Savings may be kicking us all in the rear, but fatigue is one of the most common symptoms we treat at MIMC... Ever feel so fatigued that you struggle to enjoy activities that are typically purposeful and enjoyable? Ever feel like you drink coffee, pop, or other caffeine sources like your life dependent on it? Can you relate? One of the number one concerns patients come into MIMC is because their energy just isn’t like it used to be. Fatigue can be a common result of the pressures to keep up with the demands of home life, social life, and work life. Nowadays we wear busy like a badge of honor, juggling the many titles we hold whether that be husband, wife, father, mother, student, boss, coworker, volunteer, athlete, artist, socialite. These perpetual demands leave us feeling frazzled and a never ending reliance on stimulants. And, what you might be experiencing is adrenal fatigue, or also known as Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Dysfunction. Yep, adrenal fatigue is REAL. Head hear to learn more: https://mplsimc.com/what-is-adrenal-fatigue/ #hormonebalance #hormones #hormonehealth #inflammation #functionalmedicine #thyroid #fatigue
