Freshly dried calendula for my next polyherbal infusion. "Freshly dried"... Is that a contradiction in terms? π€
A much-appreciated gift from a neighbor--organic calendula for my next polyherbal infusion. π
Working on another batch of "owie balm" (as my kiddo calls it).
My healing balm and rosehip products use a slow-infused polyherbal oil blend that was formulated by my mom and is made in-house. This batch is dedicated to my first substantial wholesale order, scheduled for production in February next year, after which I will plant a new generation of seeds.
I stepped outside to this delight yesterday--the first camas bloom on plants I welcomed last year. While camas is not native to the Missoula valley, it used to thrive in our immediate surrounds and played an important role in indigenous diets.
Today I spent some time reading Braiding Sweetgrass out loud while my son played on the livingroom floor. At one point he stopped playing, opened the front door, and proclaimed his gratitude to Spring for bringing us grass and dandelions, rain and green leaves: Kimmerer's 'allegiance to gratitude' enacted with poignant ease by a 4-year-old. π
Check it out! There's sure to be something for everyone on your list at The Last Best Store. This welcoming new space in Southgate Mall offers a range of high quality products made by Montana artisans, and I'm delighted to contribute Dr. Smith Botanicals to the collection. π²ππ€©
This fresh infusion (pun intended) of stock introduces new products, like my Rosehip Oil Beard Balm, as well as new essential oil combinations for existing products, including my new woody favorite Cedarwood and Bergamot. π±π²
And sometimes thriving tulsi takes over your greenhouse!

In a microcosm of the Great Cycle (or is it a sprial?) I am infusing oils with dried botanicals as I sow seeds and trim lavender for a new year of growth. π±π
A perfect project for a sunny spring afternoon.

Does anyone else find this mildly hypnotic, or has the lavender just gone to my head? π€ͺ
As a medical anthropologist I have been incredibly fortunate to have exemplary mentors, whose lessons have extended well beyond academic exchanges to deeply inform my ways of knowing and being in the world.
πππ
One particularly meaningful lesson is the 'body ecologic'--a more integrated alternative to Descartes's estranged body and mind/ soul, which was inspired by the work of two of my research supervisors (Nancy Scheper-Hughes at Berkeley and Elisabeth Hsu at Oxford).
πͺπ§ π‘
It also describes relationships with the natural world embodied by many indigenous peoples around the world, and codified in their ecological (and botanical) knowledge.
ππΈπ±
Stricken with an intractable case of wanderlust, I left Montana a few months into the 21st century and did not return on a permanent basis for nearly 15 years.
ππ«π
πΊ
In that period of time, I taught on 5 continents, studied 4 languages, lived in 3 foreign countries, earned 2 degrees, and missed only 1 Solstice/ Christmas back home (it was spent with family amongst the sarsens of Stonehenge, so fair trade).
πΊπ²π¬π§πΈπ¬π¨π΅
In lecture halls, libraries, herb shops, clinics, kampongs, and rainforests alike I observed humanity's complex embeddment in the natural world, and the sociopolitical matrices through which herbal medicines emerge. π±β
My botanical practices and products are expressions of the land and people (human and non-human, alike) with whom I am in reciprocal relationship. While I have been privileged to travel widely, my heart and work has always been rooted in my Rocky Mountain home.
The Dr. Smith product line is a homegrown, family- and community-oriented labor of love. The base recipe for Dr. Smith balms began with my mother Wendy's meticulous research and development over the course of many years (her Healing Balm and Rosehip Face Cream formulae remain unadulterated), and the logo features the plaque that hung in her father's (and grandfather's) medical office in Glasgow, MT. Since her passing in 2017, I have maintained and further developed her product line with great care and respect for her products and for the well-being of people who use them.
While I build this page, you can find more information about Dr Smith balms and serums at my Presents of Mind Design page: https://facebook.com/PresentsofMindDesign/
In the meantime, here are a few pictures of Dr. Smith Botanicals, in process.
