HVAC HACK

If you have an evaporative cooler, you can combat the smoke pollution by covering the cooler's air intake with pleated filters. All you need to achieve this is the filters and some tape.

Our region often experiences conditions in which evaporative coolers are ineffective at keeping us cool and comfortable. Here is a chart to understand the optimum conditions for these systems.

This chart shows the effect humidity has on our evaporative cooling systems and how much an evaporative cooler can lower temperature based on outdoor temperature and humidity levels.

In the first column of the table below, the figures represent outdoor temperatures. Then the numbers in the row located at the top of the table represent outdoor relative humidity.

The most optimum weather conditions for the efficient operation and functioning of an evaporative cooling system are located in the table’s upper left quadrant. Those conditions displayed in the blue boxes are marginal. Those conditions displayed in the other boxes immediately located under the blue ones are not suitable for evaporative cooling.
