Stress can increase pain perception. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness can help manage stress levels.

I strongly suggest using wellness apps like Calm… from sleep stories to short yoga lessons the Calm help is convenient and helpful I use it everyday several times a day.

While sleep disturbances are common, a specific issue in fibromyalgia is non-restorative sleep. This means that even after a full night’s sleep, individuals often wake up feeling tired and unrefreshed.

Isolation can worsen pain perception. Stay connected with friends and family, even if it’s just through phone calls or virtual meetings. Thanks to social media we know there is a very supportive chronic pain and fibro warrior community online. Join a support group, or join the conversation on relatable reels. You’re NOT ALONE so please don’t isolate yourself while your hurting.

I have within myself what MLK Jr. And Nelson Mandela had within them. I’ve been so blessed by my self- love journey and truly finding out who I am to become the best version of myself for myself. Forget the BBLs and Plastic Surgery work on your soul and peace of mind.

While they may need to manage their condition with medication or other treatments, it doesn’t necessarily limit their activities. In fact, there are many entertainers, athletes, and brilliant individuals who live remarkable lives despite their epilepsy diagnosis.

Many people with fibromyalgia report that their symptoms can worsen with changes in the weather, particularly during damp, cold conditions or when there are atmospheric pressure changes.

Some studies indicate that African Americans may respond differently to certain antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) compared to other populations. This could be due to genetic factors that affect drug metabolism or other physiological differences. For example, certain genetic variations that are more common in the African American population can affect the way the body processes specific AEDs, which can influence drug efficacy and the risk of side effects.

Write a caption... It's not quite winter, but I have already begun to experience wet, windy, and cold days here in Southern California. Dressing warm in cold weather is vital for fibro-warriors. This advice may be redundant to most people, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to remind my fellow warriors. Please don't wait for winter to arrive before you prepare your closet with warm clothes. Now is the perfect time to stock up on crew socks, turtle necks, thick scarves, warm beanies, Ugg boots, and puffer jackets.

Single, short-lived seizures are unlikely to cause brain damage. However, prolonged or repetitive seizures can be harmful and require emergency medical attention.

I think one of my best physical features is my hair. My emotions were all over the place when I cut my hair in preparation for brain surgery. Thankfully in 2016 the Mohawk was in style so people who didn’t know me just thought I was going with the trend.

This past May I celebrated being 3 years seizure free by having a cookout with my friends and family.

While some people with epilepsy experience convulsive seizures, there are many types of seizures, and many are not characterized by convulsions. Some seizures might involve a brief lapse in attention, a momentary staring spell, or subtle movements like lip-smacking. These are often referred to as absence seizures or complex partial seizures. It’s essential to understand the diversity of seizure manifestations to support and recognize when someone might be having a seizure.

Disparities in healthcare access and quality can exacerbate the challenges faced by African Americans with epilepsy. Limited access to specialized care, economic constraints, and mistrust of the medical system (rooted in historical and systemic injustices) can lead to delayed or inadequate treatment for epilepsy in this community. This can result in worse seizure control and a higher risk of epilepsy-related complications.

I was already a mother of 2 beautiful little girls when I got diagnosed. They had to learn about epilepsy and seizure safety steps at the age of 3 and 5 years old. They have played a significant role in my epilepsy journey. My daughters have been the reason I’ve fought so hard to manage my epilepsy. I want to be here to see them grow up.

Let’s keep breaking the stigma and spreading the truth about epilepsy.
