The Rain Maker - Enlightened Rainmaking Training & Coaching
The-Rain-Maker, A Division of Marketing Field LLC, teaches attorneys how to get new clients ethically.
141 Days, almost five months; for some, it's as if I disappeared.
I've been away from my newsletter, blog, and social media for the past few months due to health reasons. I apologize for the lack of updates. While I am always teaching my clients to be authentic, I also teach them that they do not have to provide too much information about their personal lives if they do not want to. And as a very independent person, I have always tried to keep the negative things happening in my life to myself. I rarely ask for help because I was brought up to be self-sufficient.
But I am going to open up and let you know what has been going on for the past five months. To do so, we must go back in about a year and a half in time. Even though I don’t spend a lot of time discussing it, or writing about it, I was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2021. And thankfully it was caught very early. I've never kept it a secret but I don't feel the need to lead my life with it. I just want to get rid of it.
However, after 2 surgeries, cyber-knife radiation treatments, and chemotherapy, it was discovered that the cancer had mutated and that conventional FDA-approved treatments wouldn’t help. At that time, I was put on a clinical trial to see if that would work.
Happily, the clinical trial was working – my tumors are shrinking, and no new tumors have grown/appeared.
Unfortunately, the clinical trial was also incredibly toxic to me and resulted in my being hospitalized twice and in bed for the past 8 weeks with a type of pneumonia. 141 days. That’s how long I have endured serious side effects from the treatment. It was so bad, that I have been unable to do much in my business or even in my life.
The good news: I was taken off the trial and am healing from all the negative side effects.
The better news: I am starting a different treatment that I am hoping gets me to where I want to be (cancer free) without the toxicity causing side effects.
The even better news: I am back to helping Mid-Market, Big Law, and Virtual Law Firm Attorneys become the Rainmakers they NEED to be (while achieving their billable hours) - particularly in this economic climate.
And the best news: There are going to be some amazing changes to The-Rain-Maker coming very soon (starting in July). These changes will help you build the book of business you want, capture all the billables you need, and help you be happy with your life. So be on the lookout!
Thank you to those of you who reached out during this time to see how I was. Your kind messages and well wishes have meant the world to me, and I'm truly touched by your continued support.

- I may be harping on planning lately (and I have an offer in the text so keep reading), but the fact is that it is one of the most important aspects of . And while it shouldn't be the only thing you do, you need to have a plan, or you will be throwing proverbial "spaghetti against the wall to see if it sticks." That is, you will be trying everything and anything some "law firm business development guru" says will work, and when it doesn't provide immediate results, will move on to the next tactic.
Having goals and planning to achieve them is one of the best things you can do to build your practice and a great life.

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, I am posting this quote. I think it pertains to every aspect of your life, not just .
You have the choice! Choose to make your life a life of productivity and happiness - in every way!
In the comments, please tell me what are you going to do to make your life more productive and happy?
GOOOOOOOALS!
Did you hear the soccer (football for my European friends) announcer screaming after one of the players puts it in the net?
If you are a fan of the game, you know how that sounds when a player scores a shot and maybe you feel excited for them. Well, imagine how excited you will be when you hit your business and personal development goals this year!
But if you have not written your goals down then you are not going to hit anything. It would be the equivalent of just kicking the soccer ball (football) around the field aimlessly and what's the fun of that?
Aim for the goal line by creating your own goals!

WHO WANT TO BE *
Setting goals is not about wishing, hoping, or dreaming.
In order to have a goal, something you wish to accomplish, you need to have a deadline by which you will achieve that goal.
(This week's Rainmaking Recommendation will be about HOW TO SET REALISTIC GOALS TO BUILD YOUR BOOK OF BUSINESS and will include a free 33-page book/template to help you create your 2023 goals for your business and life.
The Rainmaking Recommendation newsletter is sent to our mailing list one week before it is posted to the general legal public and this year will include offers and documents only available to subscribers. !
So you want to be a . You want to bring in new clients. That's awesome! The problem is that wishing, hoping, and praying for new clients is not a business development plan.
Instead, you have to start setting goals. And, you have to put a deadline on your goals. Because a goal without a deadline, as Napolean Hill has said, is just a dream.
Then create the tactics that will help you achieve those goals.
:
Well, it's that time of year. When everyone is asking you about your goals for 2023. Surprisingly, many don't have written goals.
Goal setting is one of the most important activities you can undertake if you would like to take control of your career. If you are not planning what you want for YOUR life and career, then you are at the mercy of someone who is planning their goals and uses you to help them achieve them.
What do you want? What will your life look like in 3 months? 6 months? or 1 year? 5 years?
Setting goals will help you achieve your desires.
If you are interested in learning more, let me know. I am offering a complimentary Rainmaking Training Session for lawyers in middle market firms, big law firms, and virtual firms. If you are interested, leave a message below, and I will get in touch.
: If you want to bring in new clients you have to take some action. And since is not something that you do once and it is complete, you have to start performing business development activities today. . . and every day. If you haven't started, then start now.
Which activities? The ones that resonate with you and that you will do constantly and consistently.
I am in the forgotten generation - the generation between the baby boomers and the millennials, also known as the X-Generation. And when we were growing up with our Baby Boomer parents, many of us were taught that there are things we do not discuss in public:
*x ( *xualorientation)
But times have changed and people have no issue discussing these things on social media. In fact, they have no issue with discussing anything and everything. TMI seems to be the purview of the millennials and the Z-Gen.
There is nothing wrong with this, per se. BUT, many of my clients, when originally discussing with them the use of social media for and have balked because they feel that would HAVE to talk about personal issues or their family or just TMI.
! You do not have to do so to be effective on social media. But what you do have to do is be authentically you. Being authentic doesn't mean having to open your entire life up to the internet. It means not being someone you are not. So, if you are someone who does provide information about themselves freely and without hesitation, by all means do so. But, if you are like me, and temper some of your personal stuff then do that.
Social media is not supposed to be about you - it is supposed to be about others. So, provide others with the information THEY need and not just what you want to say.
If you want to learn how to use social media to grow your book of business, please comment below and I will send you a link to a complimentary training session which will help you move forward.
ATTENTION: To the wonderful person who sent me the wearable blanket - not a snuggie - but a fluffy, warm blanket that you can wear like a poncho, you forgot to put your name on the package. Please let me know who you are so that I can properly thank you.
This brings me to Monday's Motivation for who want to be - saying "thank you!"
If you want help with anything in your life you have to ask. This is one of the lessons I have had to learn as I never ask for help, but always try to help everyone. But sometimes, you have to ask because people will not know you need help unless you request it.
And when help is provided, you have to acknowledge that help by saying "thank you."
When someone opens the door, say thank you. If you drop something and someone picks it up for you, say thank you. When you are buying something and a cashier checks you out, thank them. If someone lets you into the lane when you are driving, give the universal hand wave of thanks.
When someone compliments you, just say thank you. (BTW it is unnecessary to be self-deprecating or wave off the compliment.)
When someone does something nice for you, whatever it is, say thank you.
Thanking people for a referral will bring more referrals. Even if the person who referred you new business did not give you the name of a potential client whom you can help, thank them. Then take the time to teach them what kind of referral you can help with.
"Thank you" when sincerely spoken are two of the most important words you will ever learn.
CANCER SUCKS!
I have been MIA on all my social media platforms for the past month. I have not sent out the Recommendations newsletter, which is sent every Wednesday and contains information or tips and tricks on how to grow your book of business. I have not been doing anything except feeling really, truly, and deeply sorry for myself and what I have been going through.
And to my friends, clients, and followers, I am sorry for allowing this to derail my life and my business.
Cancer sucks! And even though I feel healthy, I have allowed the words: "you have cancer, again" to take me down a deep and dark hole for the past month. I have let it knock me on my back.
NO MORE! I have already kicked cancer's ass once and am ready to do it again.
And while I do not think is the place to discuss my health issues per se, one of the most important parts of your life is your mental and physical health.
Since day one I have called what I teach Enlighted Rainmaking - not in a spiritual way, but in a way in which all aspects of your life are taken into consideration while you are growing your book of business.
When you work with me, you have goals in every area of your life (in no particular order):
- Financial Goals
- Career/Business Goals
- Social/Family Goals
- Physical/Mental/Health Goals
- Relationship Goals
- Community Goals
And if you have been knocked on your ass - whether you have been laid off, not get the job you were seeking, not happy in the firm you're in, not physically well, not mentally well, have family issues, have relationship issues - whatever it is, get back up.
I am offering a complimentary Training session to attorneys in mid-size law firms and big law to help you "get back up." If you are interested, just comment below, and I will send you a link to the training session calendar so that you can choose a time that works for you.
: Do you fear social media? Networking? Public Speaking? Article or blog writing?
What do you fear that is keeping you from building the book of business you desire? Is it a lack of knowledge? The thought that you will do it "wrong"? Imposter syndrome?
The only way to get over these fears is through action. Do the thing that scares you and you will realize that it isn't scary in most instances. And if you don't know how to, then learn.
: This week's posts have been about the fact that it is not too late in the year to become a . Nor is it too late to become a if you are already a partner. Until you retire, it is never too late.
If you are an attorney in a firm, firm or ( ) law firm and would like to see what working with a is like, use the link in the first comment to sign up for the Newsletter. You will receive a personal (and I do mean personal and not autoresponse) email (within 24 hours but usually within minutes) to thank you and provide you with the link to make your appointment for a complimentary 45-minute Training session at your convenience.
There are no strings attached and no pitch. Just a way to ensure that you are doing the things you need to do to bring in new business before the end of the year.
: Do you want to be a finder, a minder, or a grinder?
Finder: The Rainmaker for the firm. They bring in new clients on a regular basis and have total control over their careers;
Minder: The middle manager - They manage attorneys, paralegals, and support teams.
Grinder: The attorney hired to do the work. To "grind" out the billable hours.
The only way to have total control over your career is to learn to and then become a Finder. You will have control over the type of work you would like to do, the people with whom you work, and the amount of money you bring into the firm (and subsequently into your own pocket).
You will also keep your job when we head into recession as the first to go are the grinders followed by the minders.
But you have to decide that this is what you want to become and then do the tasks necessary to become a Finder - that is, to become the you would like to become.
It's really your choice.
We just reached the halfway point of the year. There are six months left in the year. Six months in which you can start doing the tasks necessary to bring in new clients.
Are you doing the things you need to do? If you are in a , or firm and would like some ideas - no strings attached - on how to start making it rain before the end of the year use the link in the first comment to make your complimentary Coaching & Training Session.
This session is solely for you and will determine what YOU need to do to become a .
Wednesday's Wisdom for who want to become :
As , most of us are ruled by the billable hour. The interesting thing is that it usually takes more time to bill an hour than just an hour. Why is that?
It’s mostly because of all of the distractions we face on a daily basis. That could be anything – unexpected telephone calls, emails, pings and direct messages, social media and the internet, children when we are working at home, people knocking on our office doors (when we are back in the office), etc. But, eliminate those distractions and you wind up with more time to do more effective work – including billable work and business development work.
What distractions do you have to deal with?
for who want to become
Find a productivity management (“time management”) system that works for you.
There are so many ways to organize your day. You can use:
• Pomodoro technique
• Getting things done (GTD)
• Time Blocking
• To-do lists with deadlines
• Kanban, and
• Calendaring everything that needs to get done.
You must find a way to accomplish what is needed for your billable hours without sacrificing time for family, friends, and of course, Rainmaking activities.
What system do you use? If you need help with this, reach out to me

First, an apology to all of the wonderful people who follow this page. I have been remiss in posting for a very long time, so please forgive me.
Over the weekend, I received an email from one of my connections that asked why I was no longer doing my daily motivational quote or tip idea for who want to become .
So, beginning today, I will be re-commencing the Motivation Monday, Tip Tuesday, Wisdom Wednesday, Two-cents Thursday, and Funny Friday.
Today, we begin with this quote from Jim Rohn, one of the Godfathers of Personal Development: Either you run the day, or the day runs you.
You need to plan out your day the evening before. Then, stick to that plan. You will find yourself getting more done on a daily basis when you know what you have to do.
The Lawyers Summit begins tomorrow!
You can register for free, but you will not be able to attend the VIP Workshops (which are going to be incredible) unless you sign up for the VIP experience. In addition to the 25 amazing speakers (of which I am one of them), there are 7 interactive workshops to attend.
If you are unable to attend, for a low price you can own all of the sessions and the workshops so that you can watch at your convenience.
Thank you to Sherine Clarke for allowing me to be a part of the 2nd annual event.
