Black History Day number 2
Mary Stepp Burnett Hayden was born during the time of slavery in January 1858 to Hanah Stepp on the Joe Stepp farm in Black Mountain, North Carolina. She was part Native American and spoke a different dialect. She had long hair and would wear it in two braids wrapped around her head. She always wore a handmade apron and would put all her things in it, including herbs and materials she foraged to make medicine for the community. She said "every herb had three kinds---one is a healer, one is just a w**d, and the other is poison. Meaning one is positive, one is neutral, and one is negative." Her mother, a midwife, taught her how to deliver babies. Eventually, she became thr midwife for most of the county. She was one of those women who held together communities. When midwifery began to be restricted by law in the 1920s, these restrictions adversely affected people of color, most of whom were poor and lacked access to doctors and hospitals. She made sure to get sterile birthing supplies from the county so she could continue to provide services to her community safely. She has had a beautiful legacy and it is being continued on by her granddaughter Mary Othella Burnette.
Black History Day 1
Emma Dupree (July 4, 1897-March 12, 1996)
Was one of seven children of Pennia and Noah Willams. She grew up on a farm near Falkland, North Carolina. She eventually had 2 husbands and five children. Her first marriage at age 20, to Ethan Cherry, lasted a year. As the story goes, "that Cherry went one wisecrack too far about how many women it takes to satisfy a man. Dupree whacked him with a chair. Knocked him out cold. Then she divorced him. Then she married Austin Dupree. She got her nickname 'Lil Medicine Thang' because of her love of nature and foraging in the woods. She had been an herbalist and medicine woman since she was a child, when she began collecting plants near the Tar River area. While other children played she would be picking herbs and roots. Some would say that the concoctions looked like to***co juice and smelled like turpentine. Dupree had a famous nine-herb tonic that is still talked about to this day. Unfortunately the recipe is lost to us. Her prescriptions would always end in an note to take the medicine with faith and prayer. With her deep faith in God, Dupree would credit all her work as coming through God because created all we have on earth.
