We love when parents get excited and take pictures of their kids getting their braces placed. It’s a big deal! Even though the day can be full of mixed emotions (nervous, excited, happy, scared), we try and make sure that everyone walks out the door smiling ☺️

Meet Liam!

We are so proud of Liam as his team (SC Surf) just won the ECNL championship! AND HE SCORED THE WINNING GOAL ⚽️

The ECNL (Elite Clubs National League) is a national youth soccer developmental league, and these kids are darn good. You wouldn’t know that though by talking to Liam as he is the most chill, humble dude out there (along with his equally athletically gifted brother, Sully). He usually shows up to his appointments with his bike 🚲 and a fishing pole 🎣

Scoring the championship winning goal for a national league is almost as impressive as Liam, for the first time in 15 months, not having a broken bracket or wire at his most recent appointment! 😂 jk

But seriously, we are proud of both of these things! 😆

Congrats again, Liam! Next stop, World Cup, buddy. 🏆

Sometimes you gotta have a sense of humor with these appliances 😂

This is the only “headgear” appliance that we use at High Tide. It’s called a Reverse Pull Facemask/Headgear and it facilitates proper growth of the upper jaw (to catch up to the lower jaw) and fix underbites.

And don’t worry, we don’t make these kiddos wear this at school!! But we try to aim for at least 14 hours at home (sleep + video gaming + hanging out with family)

Why this works really well with younger patients:

🤙 more compliant patients (Can you imagine trying to persuade an 8th grader to wear this?!)
🤙 predictable skeletal change/response
🤙 treating before a skeletal growth spurt which is when most people experience even more lengthening of the lower jaw (this could make underbite worse!)
🤙 reduce risk of jaw surgery

Jack has been an incredibly compliant patient, and the progress has proven it! He’s halfway through his Phase 1 treatment now 👏👏We can’t wait to show the before and after!

Ava will wear a nighttime retainer (in addition to her small permanent retainer) to hold alignment, expansion and space for future, erupting adult teeth!!

Kelsey is kind, gentle, and has the most inviting presence. While she may sometimes appear quiet and shy 😆, her actions are usually much louder than her words. She is fiercely driven to learn more than what’s expected and improve so that she can be the best for our patients. She is always so positive and brings out the best in everyone around her!

We are so lucky to spend our days with Kelsey, and we know that our patients feel the same!

Just because we fixed your bite and alignment, doesn’t mean that we are finished with you!

Dr Trev’s favorite part of a case is towards the end when he can artistically contour irregular teeth. These finishing touches can introduce better symmetry and can really improve the esthetics of the smile. He learned these great techniques in residency from the best

“Enameloplasty” is the process of minor enamel reshaping and polishing to eliminate chips, restore teeth shape, and fixing other tooth irregularities. This painless finishing technique usually brings the treatment finish from a “Nice!” to a “Wow!”

Our patient, Ben, chose enameloplasty over other restorative options (veneers, crowns, etc), and Dr Trev agreed that this option would help his two front teeth look more proportionate to his small lateral incisors (teeth next to the two front teeth). Check out his transformation!

Isaiah started his braces treatment today 💪🏼 He was one of the football dudes that Dr Trev helped coach on the Wando C Team! This guy (who always exhibits great flow by the way) has a very bright future as a linebacker. Guy is an absolute menace on the football field, and is way too good at form tackling for an 8th grader. When it comes to raw talent and the hunger to win, some dudes just “have it”.

This may or may not have been a staged arm wrestling photo. And Dr Trev may or may not have let Isaiah win. 🤷‍♂️

Time to get back in the gym for Dr Trev.

Some things never change. Like the feeling of a noogie 25 years later from your older brother… 💪🏼

Today we started HTO clear aligner treatment for my brother, Bud! He lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin, but clear aligner therapy (i.e. Invisalign, Spark, HTO aligners) gives us the flexibility to limit the total amount of visits to the office 🤙

And if he does have to fly down for an appointment, it gives him more incentive to escape the snow and lose to his younger brother at golf ⛳️ 😆

As we start to push towards the the final months of YEAR ONE of the practice, we can start to finish cases and show off a little 😊

This particular case wasn’t super difficult but the overall treatment time was really satisfying. With great patient compliance and appropriate treatment planning, this case was SPEEDY.

Dental canting (tilted occlusion) and adult deep bites were always a year or more in treatment for me, but I’ve noticed that these cases are finishing much faster than my earlier years practicing with Invisalign. I had predicted ~12 months in treatment, but patient (and doc) were thrilled with the result at 7 months 🌟

She will be going back to her restorative dentist for some already-planned cosmetic work and shade adjustments for her front teeth 😃 🤙

Patient Fun Fact:

Leah, besides being a wonderful patient, was a C-17 pilot during the 2021 Kabul airlift. Her pictures from the event/flights are National Geographic-esque and the stories are even wilder. HBO has a documentary called ‘Escape From Kabul’ which describes the events really well and I totally recommend watching it! Thank you for your service, Leah!! 🇺🇸

After a lot of enameloplasty (filing down teeth) and a quick 2 month Invisalign (patient was weirdly invisible in the patient brushing station mirror 🤷‍♂️), we were able to transform his smile so he can walk around confidently without any further temptation(s)!

The dentist office can be scary, especially for the little ones. But it’s a whole lot less scary when friends join in on the adventure 🫎

This patient brought her stuffed animal and also had her younger sister assist with placing the expander appliance 😊😊

We also take our time and explain everything thoroughly to the patient (and mom) to make sure everyone is comfortable ❤️

These 3D printed expanders (No painful spacers anymore 🙌🙌) are seriously a game changer. So much more comfortable for our Phase 1 patients. Look out for the next post to help explain these appliances further!

Years after padding up as a WR for Brown University, I’ve turned to coaching to get back on the gridiron. I’m proud to be able to help out the C team WRs and DBs hone their skills on and off the field.

Football teaches strong work ethic, discipline, and above all, how to be a great teammate. Nothing beats the energy of a cohesive football team.

95% of the relapse crowding was fixed with mild dental expansion using Pitts 21 self-ligation braces and broader ortho wires to help create a beautiful, fuller smile 😃 which you can definitely see with her new smile!!
