Tis the season!
Posting some details of our 2022 installation at Burning Man. Still hoping to find a temporary place to install Unbound in the ‘default’ world, preferably in the Bay Area. It’s a 5-day install with the right crew and requires a fork and scissor lift. Any ideas??

The “Dust that Binds Us” will be at Foreign Lens through November and likely to be extended. Stop by at 513 Green Street and enjoy some of the amazing food and other galleries near by.

This collage is one of eight pieces in the exhibition.

This sign was so beautiful and thought provoking. Maybe it’s a dichotomy? Maybe not.

Loved how the mountains and the sunrise split the letters as we biked by. A changing vision in this expansive landscape.
From the artist:
This 10’x20’x5/8″, 12,0000 lbs, single steel plate, sculptural text by artist MIDABI … stands in the sun with subtly iridescent silver paint, large negative space, and an elongated shadow stretching across the playa.

The meaning is complex and varied, and can be summed up in this…

What is, is what is; the only other thing is nothing.

Reality exists on a horizontal plane, not a vertical one. All parts of creation are equally valid and relevant.

There is no fantasy OTHER place. This is the place.

You’re not reaching outward, through empty space, you are pressing inward, within denser space.

There is no other anything to know. There is only becoming more familiar and intimate with what is.

“Eden, from the Corpus series” is one of 8 works of mine that is in the exhibition “The Dust that Binds Us,” an exhibition of work by 30 artists who are influenced in some way by Burning Man. It is up through November at Foreign Lens on Green Street in San Francisco’s North Beach, with a reception from 5-9pm. Such a fun neighborhood with other small galleries and cafes.

Some art takes a whole village to make. So glad I had my guy of 44 years to partner with me. And thankful for the whole gang that came together in Mountain View and on Playa to make it a reality. There were over 120 people whose hands made Unbound! It was fun and it was hard.

Some of my favorites parts of the inside of the middle building were the sections where I used the inside book covers which matched the book’s end-sheets. There were interesting illustrations, design patterns, inscriptions. They added so much texture to the book cover mosaics.

Thanks to everyone who supported the building of .llc by acquiring small works of mine on our Crowdfundr. I’m finishing mailing and delivering prints now that I’m home.
This piece was chosen by a famous photographer from Dublin that I met on a David Best Temple build in Ireland in 2015. Mark’s portrait work often graces the covers of European magazines and his personal work created at Burning Man is exceptional. I’m proud I convinced him to join the Burning Man Project’s Documentary Photo Team, which Dave and I have been part of for many years. Mark and I also share in the experience of having each fallen off electric bikes at Burning Man in the pursuit of art. His fall is self-documented. Ouch!

We did the thing! And it was astounding and incredibly hard.
llc appeared in the desert at with the hard work of stellar build and strike crews.

It was hard.
Burning Man is HARD!
It was the worst weather I can remember but every other day the white-outs would end and it would be so beautiful that you knew why you were there. We didn’t get to play a lot, and we didn’t get to see all the other art that we wanted to see, but we loved the connections we made inside Unbound and all the appreciative visitors.
We love that burners adopted some 10 boxes of old books that I slowly put in the piece each day. And we loved seeing our friends. And over time we’ll remember all the stories people told us and try to share them.

Will start posting pictures soon, but first I have to recover from exhaustion and a broken clavicle. Here’s some press that includes us:

Best of Burning Man 2022 - ArchiPanic Architecture, Art – Burning Man 2022 celebrates dreamers’ ability to connect to other-worldly dimensions, get inspired, and inject reality with surrealism and magic. Because, after all, what is Black Rock City if not a collective manifestation of the community’s dreams? We have selected twelve...

Goodbye to my studio mate and friend who helped us create a group studio in 2014 after we left our Palo Alto City sponsored studios. Lois was a strong partner and a balancing force when I got obsessive. During the pandemic Dave and I would occasionally walk to her and Eddie’s house to deliver bread and chat. When I said goodbye to her last week she asked about our project by name and said she could tell from the pictures we were having fun. Always so supportive. She lived fully with Stage IV cancer for ten years. I will miss you Lois❤️

Burning Man is hard.

Burning Man is funny.

What it becomes after weeks, months, years of building art, is piles of dusty things everywhere staged for the Playa. Dusty clothes in different places, boots in the garage, food for the crew packed in boxes, long dead bikes with no time to fix so you buy a new one, shirts to organize and bring for the crew. It’s crazy, always, every time, before you leave. Now with four days before departure, we do what we can during the day and at night—after making lists in bed and jumping up three times to write them down— I dream of the beauty of the Playa before everyone arrives and imagine how fun and challenging it will be to build this piece with our friends!

How fortunate are we to have such a passionate and creative journey to be on!? Couldn’t love our crew more and all my friends coming by to help me organize and pack. It takes a tribe of people who ‘get it’ to get there!

Burning Man is still fun.

Our Crowdfundr to support .llc ends this Monday. There is still time to be able to select a work of art and support large scale art in the community.

Another work of art goes home with a friend and supporter to help us get to Burning Man after 3 years.

Some more stacks of walls as they get packed up to be shipped out to Black Rock City. 3 years away from the place and we’re getting excited!!

Stacking all the walls —we have 137 walls altogether! Getting them all to Burning Man intact and ready to build is our next challenge. Follow along on .llc to see it come together at the end of August.

Photos from Julia Nelson-Gal's post 06/08/2022

These three collaborative pieces are being offered as a fundraiser for .llc . Katrina Davidson, Scott Prusso and I mailed these back-and-forth to each other last fall while they were in New Mexico. While there may be a few small changes from these photos, we’ve decided to offer them to support our Burning Man project. The fundraiser link is in my profile here as well as at Unbound. Or you can pm me to pay directly.

The panels are each about 12 x 12“, textural and each with a piece of metal incorporated into the panel. They are not framed. We will pay for shipping in the contiguous US. You can choose one of these for a $200 donation—priced below my regular price for a 12 x 12 panel.
Thanks for looking❤️.

How to draw a pattern on 14’ walls? Wake up at 2:30 am, think about it, go to studio at 5:30am, chalk the lines with your assistant/hubby, then start painting.

Photos from Julia Nelson-Gal's post 06/03/2022

A few closeups of book pages on the 14-ft tall walls of .llc .

The first image always reminds me of a photograph taken by Linda Connor of Siem Reap, Angor Wat. The third image has an image from a childhood Fairytale book that belonged to my friend Terril Neely who died last year. The last image is an awkward shot of Kissinger kissing Golda Meir next to a Florentine wall.

I love the mix of information from all these old books and the memories and thoughts they elicit for me.
