We often take insects for granted, but they are a vital component of the ecosystem, and without them, we simply cannot survive." - Danesa Stolz

🌿 Pollinator Plants of the Week: Hostas & Coralbells🌿

Hostas: Native to China, Japan, and Korea, hostas found their way to the US from Europe in the 1800s. Hostas are also called Plantain Lilies for their large patterned leaves and can thrive in shade, making them an excellent choice for a garden that lacks direct sun throughout the day. Hostas are a great attraction for hummingbirds and bees!

Coralbells: Heuchera, or Coralbells, are a North American Native plant! While their flowers are not the primary aspect of the plant itself, their nectar and pollen attract small bees like sweat bees and their specialized pollinators, known as Colletes aestivalis, which are only attracted to the native Heuchera. Species of Coralbells that produce red flowers are a great food source for hummingbirds.

Our Garden Centers carry a variety of hostas and coralbells - Stop in and chat with our gardening specialists about which is best for your outdoor spaces!

If not watered properly, plants, trees, and shrubs can suffer during hot summer temps.

Keeping grass mowing heights above 3" helps retain moisture in the ground and protects grass roots better.

For best practices, download our care sheet on how to water your plants to help keep them thriving through the heat of summer!

Pollinators are booked 'n "buzz-y" right now! 🐝🌼

Take a moment to learn about the popular pollinators responsible for our lush gardens each year:

Bees & Wasps
• Out of all the pollinators, bees are among the most popular and proficient. According to the USDA, bees of all sorts pollinate approximately 75 percent of the fruits, nuts and vegetables grown in the United States, and one out of every four bites of food people take is courtesy of bee pollination.
• Wasps don’t work to collect pollen; instead, they passively transfer it while visiting plants for nectar.

Butterflies & Moths
• Like wasps, butterflies pollinate while feeding on nectar from flowers and crops. This makes them less efficient than bees, but still vital to plant reproduction.
• Moths mostly pollinate at night and feed on nocturnal flowers, that are typically white, heavily fragranced, and abundant with nectar.

Hummingbirds
• Hummingbirds are the most common feathered pollinators in the US, and they play a major role in pollinating bright and tubular flowers throughout the day.
