6.5, 6.7, 7.3!!! Only some of our chickens. These are all in the $30 range. We have a few smaller but not many!
Beautiful day to install fencing!!! We tried electric fences but the pigs busted right through once they were big enough. Our pigs love eating the grass so we need to get em back out there!
Happy little chickens enjoying the sun, the grass, and the bugs!!!
Oh Hai!!!
Good morning from The Jansen Family Farm! We hope everyone is enjoying their Thursday morning as much as we are!
It's crazy how consistent the goat's milk production is. The middle is yesterday, the right is today (am/pm both goats) the left one is two days ago and the one we are currently using! It's not a ton of milk but we haven't used cow milk in like 2 weeks I think.
The goats are loving their new digs.
Getting there!
Coming soon to The Jansen Family Farm!
The Black one is Sapphire - Nubian
White w/brown spots is Lucy - Nigerian Dwarf
Tri Color is Marigold- a Nigerian Dwarf
Sapphire and Marigold are both in milk. Woohoo!
What's going on at the The Jansen Family Farm? We are adding new animals soon! Anyone (who we haven't told) have any idea?!?!
"Highland" is happy to be in pasture! We currently have two breeds of pigs growing out for us. Kune kune and Idaho Pasture Pigs.
We get asked how we are able to raise cute animals and then eat them. I thought this picture goes really well with one of the reasons. Did you know that most pork isn't that light pink you get in grocery stores? In 1987, the pork industry started that campaign for people that were health conscious and liked white meat chicken. They bred pigs that had light colored meat and happen to be not as nutritious as other breeds. Commercial farming breeds are typically lighter meat than other breeds. Lol how red these chops are!
Good morning from the piggies!
Another pig drop...I can't help it.
Jansen Family Farms has a some new family members! Three Kune Kune pigs. Picking up 3 more pigs this week!
This batch of birds we did were so much healthier than the last batches. They walked around to the very end (the last batches would just sit even though they had plenty of room) and processing, the ligaments and cavity just seemed "better". It's hard the describe. But so far the texture and flavor is better too!
Due to rain tomorrow am, we changed our chicken processing day (to turn them into food) to Monday 8am. If anyone wants to come help (we need help lol we have 30 chickens) you get to go home with a whole chicken and learn how to process!
When Wayne told me he wanted to start cooking with tallow and lard instead of oils, I was a little confused.
We had recently switched to avocado oil due to the high burn rate and the fact that it's healthier than others. We also use butter for cooking (obviously) so why was I confused? LARD?!?! Doesn't that scream heart disease?
No! After my own research, I found that pasteured animal fat is not "BAD" like we have always thought. It has a lot to do with seeing the sun, what they are fed, and not being riddled with vaccines and antibiotics.
(Feel free to read about this here: https://empoweredsustenance.com/lard-is-healthy/)
So today we used the leaf fat (the healthiest fat) from the pigs that were butchered this morning and rendered our own lard. It was a neat process and I love learning about all of this. I'll post pictures of the process below. I'm happy to answer any questions!
Miss cherry gave us 2 gallons of milk today (she produce 2.5 but we only took 2). This is enough raw milk to give our family milk and butter for the week.
30 chickens out in pasture to enjoy a better life than most meat chickens. They walk, scratch the dirt/greens, and eat bugs. We feed them high quality (not organic unfortunately $) feed and there are no chemicals used around them. We are taking pre-orders $30 whole chicken between 6-8lbs
Fresh milk! I can't wait until we get a cow!
These pups had a rough first night but are doing so much better today.
At home sick today so I got to check on the garden and piggies.
Just a reminder of how much I love my eggs!
I love when a bee lands on me, I pretend it's one of mine and they are just stopping to say "hi!"
Guess who is the boss? Yup, good ol' floppy comb!
Such a fun night! We got to harvest some veggies and make a delicious dinner together.
The pigs were really interested in the Eucalyptus wood chips.
These big boys are getting ready for this Saturday. If you want to come learn how to gently process your own chicken, you can join us. If you would like to leave with a chicken, it's $25 (that's cost at this point for us) we will start around 8:30 or 9:00am to avoid heat/flies.
The three little piggies are getting big!
