Some of today’s masses to remove or biopsy in Honduras:
In a Different Honduran prison today: one patient frightened by his skin turning Gray-Brown in patches: ge****ls, then legs, arms, neck, torso: he has “Cinderella” disease (in Spanish), aka Ashy Dermatosis or Erythema Dyschromicum Perstans; for him today we have prayer, love, and reassurance that his condition is not dangerous or contagious and not his fault.
Today in a chilly mile-high Honduran prison my last patient today was a terrified 23-year-old with a pin painfully stuck protruding from his leg for 10 years : today he received love and a miracle:
Today some patients with skin cancers on the face; if left untreated these pigmented BCCs would be ultimately horribly destructive. I am thankful for these sweet people and lots of hugs today :)
Before and after rhinophyma surgery; challenging but rewarding!

Who’s ready for a medical mission? How about leadership? I’m searching for someone seriously interested in serving God as an apprentice team director for Honduras Dec. 15-22. Are you in?
One of 20+ “before and after” from my patients today. Most had been waiting years in hopes someone could help them. Church
Venting here: new patient this week seeking second opinion; he has had biopsies, and tried many treatments, but doesn’t know the names. In the USA, medical practices do not share information due to privacy laws, so we are often left guessing. We can do better!
CONGRATULATIONS! Two outstanding professionals have been selected as the 2023-2024 State Representatives for Dermatology PA Students: Isabella Gordon and Ally Knight.
Both are part of the MUSC PA Class of 2024. They will be recognized at the state and national level, via the SCSDPA, affiliate of the national Society of Dermatology PAs. They will coordinate volunteering and shadowing activities for PA and pre-PA students. Their jobs include coordinating dermatology night at the Dream Center Clinic, health fairs, educational dinner events, and media promotions.
Ally Knight (on left) is originally from Walterboro, South Carolina and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2020 with a BS in Exercise Science. She loves hanging out with family and friends, and her favorite activity in Charleston is boat rides (with adequate SPF of course 😉). She has been known to add hot sauce to probably every meal she eats. Her interest in dermatology is rooted in her prior career as a Medical Assistant at a dermatology practice.
Isabella Gordon (on right) grew up in Fairfax, VA and graduated in 2021 from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.S. in Kinesiology. She loves doing anything active; exploring Charleston, spending time with family and friends, and dissecting reality TV shows with a glass of chocolate milk. Before starting PA school, she worked as a CMA at an Allergy and Immunology office, which is where her interest in dermatology began.

Patient had a specific story of how she got poison ivy, but months later it is not clearing. See from the progressively closer photos this is actually an auto immune disease called lichen planus!
Another found in stage 1 🙏
Miracles happen every day! We can now treat the source of psoriasis and restore healthy immune function!
Case of the day: prior vitiligo patient w/4 months of asymptomatic slightly scaly white to pink diffuse plaques on both arms. Your diagnosis? (See Next post for answer)
I need clarification on something: We have a new derm PA in our practice, and she showed me our state (LLR) has a scope of practice online for PAs and it appears to claim that PA cannot excise skin cancers, even BCC and SCC. I am pretty sure that happens every day in our state (SC) but I need some proof or at least evidence that it is legal. Anyone have anything?
CONGRATULATIONS! From a record-breaking number of highly qualified applicants, two outstanding professionals have been selected as the 2022-2023 State Representatives for Dermatology PA Students:
Lauren Bostwick, PA-S, MUSC: Originally from Jacksonville, Ms. Bostwick graduated from the University of Florida in 2020. She spent time in dermatology and plastic surgery practices, and developed an enduring passion for the specialty. Lauren is dedicated to sharing that excitement with other PA students through serving and encouraging involvement in their communities and beyond.
Samantha Peters, PA-S, MUSC: Ms. Peters is also in MUSC’s PA class of 2023. Originally from Dayton, Ohio she graduated from the University of South Carolina in December of 2019. She became interested in dermatology while working as a medical assistant at Trident Dermatology before PA school. She is committed to helping coordinate opportunities for her classmates so they can gain more knowledge and experience in the field.
The CDC hasn't updated their masking recs for HCPs since February. What is YOUR office doing about unmasked people in the waiting room? Leave them alone? Make them mask up or leave? Sell/give them a mask? Let's hear from everyone please.
for the first time since the pandemic began, we are finally back to learning and dining together with colleagues! Tonight we learned about groundbreaking genetic tests that save lives of patients with invasive skin cancers.
Congrats to the new 2021-2022 State Representatives! America Seach and Haley Hall have been chosen to serve a term with the SC Society of Dermatology PAs for the next year. They will be key advocates and connect students with opportunities to serve and network in our state.
Seach is a 2nd-year PA student at MUSC, raised right here in Charleston. She graduated from Clemson University in 2017. She is excited to be able to use this opportunity to connect students with different aspects of Dermatology and encourage involvement within the community.
Hall is also a second year PA student at MUSC. She is from Lexington, SC and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She fell in love with dermatology working as a medical assistant for a dermatology PA. She is looking forward to representing PA students and coordinating dermatology opportunities in the coming year.
