31 years ago today, I married the most beautiful, wonderful person I have ever known. I knew from the instant we met that we would spend the rest of our lives together. It was the most reassuring moment anyone could have. Since that first day she has supported me and loved me through record-setting highs and she has carried me through the darkest possible days. Please join me this weekend in the beautiful Imperial Wilderness, an active, gated, 55+ community where you OWN the land. This resort-like community is a hidden jewel located halfway between gorgeous downtown Naples and Marco Island's amazing beaches. This home has been well taken care of and is very clean. The enclosed addition/lanai area leaves many options for decorating or remodeling. The current owner has used the dining room area as a 2nd living room and you will see that it can be turned into a formal dining area quite easily. Bluegrass singer and mandolinist Bobby Osborne, who died Tuesday at age ninety-one, needed just one word to get an audience’s attention: “Ruby!”

When the Osborne Brothers first recorded “Ruby, Are You Mad” in 1956, he belted out that name at a sky-high pitch, with the force and capacity of a steam whistle. As his banjoist brother, Sonny (1937-2021), and their bandmates came barreling down the track behind him, a bluegrass classic was born.

For more than seventy years, Osborne hit the high notes, whether it was singing the original and definitive version of “Rocky Top,” entering the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Hall of Fame in 1994, or cherishing his fifty-eight-year role as a member (and fixture) of the Grand Ole Opry.

Born December 7, 1931, in Hyden, Kentucky, and raised near Dayton, Ohio, Osborne devoted himself to music after seeing a performance by Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys band as a child.

While still in his teens, Osborne began playing guitar and mandolin with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and Jimmy Martin before serving with the Marines in the Korean War. After two years, he was honorably discharged with numerous medals, including a Purple Heart.

Upon his return home in 1953, Osborne forged a partnership with his younger brother, Sonny, who had been touring with Monroe. They began to perform locally in Dayton as the Osborne Brothers with Red Allen and were soon signed to MGM Records by Wesley Rose.

“Ruby” kicked off a string of invigorating tunes that placed Osborne’s lofty vocals front and center. Their early output included “Once More,” which in 1958 became their first (and highest charting) country hit—a rare feat for a bluegrass act at the time. That song introduced an innovative harmony style for the Osbornes, in which Bobby sang the lead as the tenor voice, with Sonny and Red Allen singing the harmony parts below him. It would become one of their hallmarks.

But if any song could be considered the Osbornes’ signature, it was “Rocky Top,” which has endured as a sports anthem for the University of Tennessee, as well as one of Tennessee’s state songs. The duo was the first to record the classic, written by famed Nashville songwriting couple Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, in 1967.

After reaching new heights in the early ’70s—when they earned the 1971 CMA Award for Vocal Group of the Year and became the first bluegrass act to perform at the White House—the Osborne Brothers re-embraced their traditional roots. For decades, they remained a favorite at festivals and on the Opry stage.

When a shoulder injury led his brother to retire in 2005, Osborne carried on with a new group, the Rocky Top X-Press, which featured his son, Bobby Osborne Jr.

As a performer, Osborne dazzled crowds—and not just with the sequined hat bands and eye-catching suits he wore onstage in his later years. His was a blistering style on the mandolin, informed by electric guitar and fiddle licks he admired, as well as Monroe’s influence.

Osborne was still singing “Rocky Top” just last month, when he gave his final performance at the Grand Ole Opry with the Rocky Top X-Press.
