Many people started digitizing their photos with desktop document scanners at a resolution of 600 DP, but now we have high resolution overhead scanners and even our cell phones can digitize our photos at 12.6 megapixels, which produces much better digitized images! Technology is advancing every day with photo improvement, colorization and other enhancements. Starting with the original photo is far better than any scan done at 600 dpi. We recommend storing your photos safely away after you digitize them, so they are available to take advantage of future Technolgies. If you don't have room to store them, ask a relative who will treasure them just like you do!

With tens of thousands of photos from the LoC, Related Faces may help you break through your "research brick wall." This Daguerreian photo taken by Fracis Grice pairs with three women in one family and is indicating a new direction for genealogical research. Craig's Daguerreian Registry (craigcamera.com/dag) is a great resource for additional information about LoC Daguerreian collection photographers. In this case, New York City and San Francisco are areas where Grice's photos may have been taken, and where a new search for family names will begin. Who will you discover?

Join us in Richmond, VA, May 31 - June 3, for NGS's Annual Conference. Related Faces is excited to again participate as an exhibitor. The conference is a must for anyone interested in genealogy.

Did you ever think you might be able to solve your photo mysteries with gravestones? We were connected to the awesome people at the Carlentini Omaha Association who want to utilize Related Faces to do just that! We were invited to present to them how Related Faces works and then a much longer discussion followed on how we could help with their project.
We are amazed on a regular basis at the creative ways people are utilizing Related Faces, and it's obvious people have been waiting for this technology to be put into their hands!
All over Europe gravestones are embellished with photos of the grave occupants. What an amazing gift to genealogists and families who are trying to put names to the faces in their unlabeled photos!!

Tell 150 people to gather for a group photo and you would expect it to be like herding cats! But not with The Photo Managers! No chaos at all! But of course, they are the organization experts!!! Having fun in Orlando!

Today's Tip touches on two things we often see/are asked, 1. Do photos digitized on document scanners work with facial recognition? and 2. Do digitally repaired photos work with Related Faces?
The wedding party photo boxed in teal was digitized on a document scanner. You can see it was turned into a bunch of dots! Facial Recognition sees this as a collection of dots not faces, so, we recommend avoiding document scanners. To digitize photos yourself we recommend using your cell phone.
But what if you inherited or were given a document scanned image? We did some testing and found photo restoration is a good solution. We passed our image through a restoration program twice. Even passing our image through one time, improved the photo enough for Related Faces to identify the correct person as the bride. The second pass through resulted in a nice, restored face and we were still able to identify the face of the bride correctly. Of the people in the photos, two were correctly identified, one was not, and the third remains unknown. So, photo restoration may be a good option if you have digitized photos like these.
