Bummer. Mylon LeFevre became an unlikely buddy of mine in the early 80s. He was barely a footnote in rock & roll history, remembered mostly as the guy that did that album with Alvin Lee from Ten Years After called “On The Road To Freedom” 50 years ago featuring more rock star guests than Carter had pills. It was a good record but did little to boost Mylon’s rock career. What I didn’t realize at the time was that Mylon was from a well-known family of southern white gospel music singers. Years before Mylon got together with Alvin Lee, he had already written a hit gospel song, “Without Him” at the tender age of 17. Elvis Presley recorded this song on his Grammy winning album “How Great Thou Art” in 1967. Within the next year, over 100 other artists would cover the tune and make Mylon a wealthy young man. All of this didn’t end well for him when drugs took over his body and mind, but he eventually made his way back to Jesus and gospel music. I related to him quite a bit because, as a youngster, Mylon wanted to write and sing contemporary music that gave glory to God but there seemed to be no place for his music or his long hair in his famous family, let alone the church. We both had to figure out how to do this on our own to varying degrees of success or failure. Fate brought us together when he and his band were booked to do a concert at my home church in the early 80s. His bus broke down en route and he had to enlist the help of my band The 77s to fill in for his. This same unlikely event took place yet another time a year or two later, both to Mylon’s dismay and delight. He actually confided to us, “You guys are better than my band!”. He might have been pulling our collective legs, but from the way he said it, I think he actually meant it. I had given him a hard time about claiming to be a “rocker” and then putting out an exceedingly non-rock MOR album on MCA in order to insure sales with the more conservative church crowds he was pursuing. “Don’t call yourself a rocker and then put out this milquetoast pap,” I told him. It really pi**ed him off at the time, but when he came back to hire The 77s a second time, he thanked me. “Brother, I was wrong”, he confessed. By that time, he had traded the easy listening pop material he had been doing for a decidedly more raucous approach, much to the approval of his fans. Indeed, his church audiences grew to great proportion after that and he was able to tour for another ten years and make a living at it. I was proud of him and he was grateful to me for my advice so it was a win-win. We lost touch over the years as he went on to focus on preaching and other non-musical ministry, but we reconnected recently and he was still that same polite and hilarious Southern gentleman I remembered from decades before. He eventually lost his long battle with cancer just shy of his 79th birthday, but I’m sure he’s giving them hell up in heaven. God bless you my dear brother. I’ll see you over in the gloryland. 4th of July thoughts from pastor Greg Laurie

I think we would do well to look at the soul of our nation right now. What once was freedom of religion seems to have become freedom from religion. Our society has succeeded in getting God out of our schools, out of our sporting events, out of our public places, and out of our workplaces.
But here’s what we need to remember. The freedom we enjoy today is built on the foundation of absolute truth. And when you remove that foundation, this freedom actually can turn into anarchy.
So, let’s have a great time with family and friends celebrating our independence as a nation. But let us remember to not forget God. He has never, even for a moment forgotten about us.
Let’s pray our nation turns back to Him again.
