Alexander Murray Palmer Haley was an American writer who represented generations of African Americans in his historical fiction works. His 1976 book “Roots: Saga of an American Family” won a 1997 Pulitzer Prize for the national discussion of racism and slavery in the United States. Check out this one of many of his influential books in the library today!

Yolanda Cornelia “Nikki” Giovanni is an American poet who transformed the Black Arts movements in the late 1960s. Giovanni has published several collections of poetry which examine the oppression of Black people in works such as her influential prose poem “Nikki-Rosa.” Besides writing, Giovanni is an activist for civil rights, and she spoke to Belmont’s First Year Seminar courses on-campus in 2018.
