This painting was quite fun. The people who commissioned me had seen a painting of mine and wanted a larger version with morning glories. They were straightforward to work with, and we had fun putting it together as a team.

This man was quite intimidating when I first met him. He was severe in manner and scowled at most non-Mykonians. It turns out he was a real pussycat and was as nice as could be. He worked very hard and always had candy for the local children who tended to follow him around when he was out and about. He treated everyone with respect and was a real gentleman. I was drawing the church when he came up the hill, and I quickly sketched him and took a few photos. He just smiled as he passed. He had gotten used to me out with my sketch pad and seemed to approve of me.

The first painting I did was of red poppies in a field coming down a mountain in Mykonos, Greece. It was a year that everyone remembers as the ‘year of the poppies.’ It was the first painting I sold and the first painting I did where I drew and took pictures and wasn't copying something. That painting was my first professional painting; I was lucky; someone bought it.
