On October 6th, 1998 Matthew Shepard was beaten, tortured and left for dead in an obscure field in Laramie, WY. Matthew survived the brutal attack only to die six days later of the head injuries he received at the hands of two homophobic murderers.

Shepard's murder brought national and international attention to hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels. In October 2009, the United States Congress passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. That act was signed into law by then President Barack Obama.

20 years after his death and in the face of continued efforts to pass anti-LGBT initiatives at the state and federal levels, Matthew was finally laid to rest at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C.

In June 2019, Shepard was one of the inaugural fifty American “pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes” inducted on the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor within the Stonewall National Monument (SNM) in New York City’s Stonewall Inn.

May his legacy live on and may he Rest In Peace always! We will never forget.

Today is National Coming Out Day.
We are celebrating and commemorating those that have courageously taken the step to live authentically.

While we want a world where everyone is out, loud and proud, it is important we recognize that for some coming out may not be a safe option. Be patient, and seize the moment when it right for you!

It’s your decision, your life and it should be on your term! Find your strength, find yourself, and find your truth!

Happy National Coming Out Day!
