Grant: Why are crapemyrtles leaves falling? 13/08/2024

Don't be too worried if you see spots on your crepe myrtle leaves

Grant: Why are crapemyrtles leaves falling? Crapemyrtles are beloved for their vibrant summer blooms and attractive bark, making them a popular choice for many East Texas gardens. However, like any plant, they are not immune to diseases.

You can help the pollinators and have a beautiful garden, why not the best?

Add host plants in your pollinator gardens! These host plants are the nurseries of the pollinator garden, where the eggs and immature insects grow before metamorphosis into butterflies and moths.

Some examples include:
Dill, fennel, and parsley- Eastern black swallowtail
Cassias- sulfur butterfly
Hollyhock- painted lady
Passion vines- Gulf fritillary butterfly
Milkweed- monarch butterfly
Bean plant- long-tailed skipper

TREE OF THE MONTH: EASTERN REDBUD

This small deciduous tree is best known for its early blooming, soft pink flowers, and it is often used in landscaping. Most anyone can add this beauty to their yard because of its incredible adaptability to different soil conditions and its small stature. Being a small tree, redbuds reach 23 to 30 feet in height with a diameter of only 10 inches.

Here are some characteristics of eastern redbuds:

Leaves: Eastern redbuds have glossy, heart-shaped leaves that are bright green until they transition into shades of yellow and orange in the fall.

Bark: Eastern redbuds start out with smooth light brown bark that darkens and becomes furrowed and rough as the tree ages.

Fruit: Being closely related to beans and peas, the fruit is a thin pod containing flat, brown seeds that often remains through the winter.

Habitat: Native to North America, eastern redbuds are found from Canada to Mexico along forest edges, beneath hardwoods, and near streams.

And it makes your pots unnecessarily heavy

We’ve all purchased beautiful containers and later realized there is not a drainage hole at the bottom. You’ve probably heard that all you have to do is place a layer of gravel at the bottom of the container to help with drainage.

👉The truth is, the gravel will only hinder water movement within the container, so it’s not recommended to try this. Instead, drill several small holes in the bottom of the container and be sure to use good soil. Your plants will thank you!
